Based upon the show business aspirations and successes of R&B acts such as The Supremes, The Shirelles, James Brown, Jackie Wilson, and others, the musical follows the story of a young female singing trio from Chicago, Illinois called "The Dreams", who become music superstars. It was nominated for thirteen Tony Awards, including the Tony Award for Best Musical, and won six. It was later adapted into a motion picture from DreamWorks and Paramount Pictures in 2006.

Singer/Actress Frenchie Davis brings her brash wit and iconic vocal style to The Copa in Palm Springs for two intimate performances, January 16 and 17 at 8:00 pm. Davis auditioned for the second season of the groundbreaking FOX show "American Idol" and her tremendous success on the show launched a career that has taken her to Broadway (Rent, Dreamgirls and eventually becoming a Grammy-nominated artist for the revival of Ain't Misbehavin') and, perhaps, her highest profile gig as one of the top four finalists in the first season of The Voice. Her cover of 'When Love Takes Over' landed at #3 on the iTunes Dance Chart. I had the chance to chat with French as she was preparing for her Palm Springs engagement. Chicagoland audiences will rejoice with The Marriott Theatre's first mainstage production of their 2016 Subscription Season, the heavenly Broadway musical comedy, SISTER ACT, previewing February 10, opening February 17 and running through April 3 at 10 Marriott Drive, Lincolnshire.  Featuring a sparkling score by Tony, Grammy and Academy Award-winner Alan Menken, with lyrics by Grammy Award-winner Glenn Slater, the hilarious and joyful musical is based on the hit Whoopi Goldberg film of the same name. Nashville actor and NFL Hall of Famer Eddie George, who makes his Broadway debut Tuesday night in the iconic musical Chicago, was named First Night's Outstanding Leading Actor in a Play for his searing portrayal of a former slave haunted by the spectre of abuse in Nashville Repertory Theatre's The Whipping Man. Rene Dunshee Copeland, producing artistic director of Nashville Rep, was named Outstanding Director of a Play, while her three-actor ensemble (which included James Rudolph and Matthew Rosenbaum) were awarded as First Night's Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Play for their rendition of the Matthew Lopez play. Tammy Faye Starlite, who has brought Nico and Marianne Faithful to life on the cabaret stage joins musical theater fanatic, cruise ship performer and celebrity stalker Lance to talk about channeling these songstresses on his long-running variety-talk show on Sunday, February 7 at 7PM at the Triple Crown Underground, 330 7th Ave, NYC. As always, Lance has invited Cher, Liza Minnelli, Hugh Jackman, Gloria Estefan and Andrew Lloyd Webber to be guests on his makeshift talk show, but they've yet to confirm.  (more...)
