by Brian Rivera - Feb 24, 2015

On February 19th, I braved the cold and ventured to Main Street in Northport to witness the opening night of Bare Bones Theater Company's production of 'The Pillowman,' by Martin McDonagh. 'With echoes of Stoppard, Kafka, and the Brothers Grimm, THE PILLOWMAN centers on a writer in an unnamed totalitarian state who is being interrogated about the gruesome content of his short stories and their similarities to a series of child murders. The result is an urgent work of theatrical bravura and an unflinching examination of the very nature and purpose of art.' (more...)

Under the direction of Philip Fazio, Stephen Sondheim's Follies is receiving Arizona's first fully produced production at Theater Works. Mr. Fazio has pulled out all the stops to stage an extravaganza that in Broadway lore has been dubbed one of the great milestones of musical theater. Conceptually, the show has the ingredients and the theatrical devices that can make for a great show, but, live and on stage, the production feels cluttered. Its brilliance lies rather in its outstanding technical aspects, in large part attributable to Mr. Fazio's artistic vision. (more...)

by BWW News Desk - Feb 19, 2015

'All Gone West,' a new play by John Attanas, transports us to the New York jazz scene of the early 50's. An Army vet, in love with a secretary at CCNY, would win her by setting up a be-bop club on Ninth Avenue with the help of a black saxophonist he has befriended in the service and a couple of low-lives he has met along the way. The couple's story is one of dreams dashed and fulfilled; love denied and embraced. The play features a cast of six plus a live, four-piece jazz ensemble. BWW Recap: Nacho Realizes He BETTER CALL SAULBWW Recap: Nacho Realizes He BETTER CALL SAUL

Last week, we were glued to our television screens as we returned to Albuquerque to witness the birth of Saul Goodman as we know him. We're learning more and more about Walter White's crafty lawyer, including how he met Tuco, and consequently, how he morphed into the ethically confused man we know and love. At the end of last week's premiere episodes, good little Jimmy followed all the rules, as any good defense attorney should. But his moral ambiguities revealed themselves just enough to confuse not only viewers, but also Jimmy himself. Sure, he's responsible for those twins getting their legs broken, but at least he took them to the ER afterwards...right? Right? He's still a good, law-abiding guy...right? (more...)
