BWW Reviews: Odets Classic AWAKE AND SING! at Huntington Theatre CompanyBWW Reviews: Odets Classic AWAKE AND SING! at Huntington Theatre Company
by Nancy Grossman - Nov 15, 2014

It is a signal of good writing and significant dramatic impact that a play which premiered in 1935 can be relevant nearly eighty years later. Clifford Odets' classic Awake and Sing! is grounded in the dire economics of the depression era and the circumstances of a Jewish immigrant extended family struggling to survive in their overcrowded Bronx apartment. Informed by her own family history, Obie Award-winner Melia Bensussen directs the Huntington Theatre Company production with intensity and an inherent understanding of the challenges faced by the Bergers and their ilk. BWW Reviews: Street Corner Arts Stages Powerful and Moving WAITING FOR LEFTYBWW Reviews: Street Corner Arts Stages Powerful and Moving WAITING FOR LEFTY
by Frank Benge - Dec 8, 2014

WAITING FOR LEFTY was written in 1935 by Clifford Odets. The play is, and was written as, an immersive piece of theatre. It is, ostensibly, a meeting of cab drivers who are gathering to plan a strike. As an audience member, you become a part of that meeting. While the meeting is going on, we are exposed to a series of scenes which are related to the meeting in that they delve into the lives of the characters to frame what brought them to this meeting. What is striking is that nearly 80 years later, WAITING FOR LEFTY still resonates and has something to say to modern audiences… especially those who struggle to make ends meet on a daily basis.
