Broadway Veterans Round Out Cast of Arena Stage's Reimagined OLIVER!Broadway Veterans Round Out Cast of Arena Stage's Reimagined OLIVER!
by BWW News Desk - Aug 28, 2015

Molly Smith directs her 30th production as Artistic Director of Arena Stage with a gritty and relevant take on the Tony Award-winning musical Oliver!, blending the chaotic worlds of 19th-century Victorian London with 2015 London. Smith's new in-the-round staging infuses a modern edge to the classic musical about an innocent orphan thrown into the dark world of double-dealing thieves and conmen, highlighting the disparity between classes and dangerous life on London's streets today. Featuring a remarkable score including 'You've Got to Pick a Pocket or Two,' 'Consider Yourself,' 'Where is Love?' and 'Food, Glorious Food,' Oliver! runs October 30, 2015-January 3, 2016 in the Fichandler Stage at Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater. Fitness Resort in Malibu Offers Zumba, Fit Conditioning, Strength Training and Nutrition EducationFitness Resort in Malibu Offers Zumba, Fit Conditioning, Strength Training and Nutrition Education
by BWW News Desk - Aug 25, 2015

The typical day at Wellfit Malibu starts with a two-hour hike in the scenic Santa Monica mountains. Fitness classes - including Zumba, fit conditioning, and strength training - along with cooking demonstrations, nutrition talks and A Life coaching circle, fill out the rest of guests' scheduled stay. Throughout their time at Wellfit, guests feel improved physically and mentally, with new life-long habits and friendships. Wellfit Friends Sue Martin lives in the small town of Postville in Northeast Iowa where she works as a special education teacher. Over the last 20 years, Sue has added unwanted weight. Married with children, Sue realized she had to do something about her health, so she booked her stay at Wellfit. 'I was expecting for it to be all about diet and exercise,' Sue says. 'But between the conversations with the life coach, the hiking guides and trainers, I found that everyone was so warm and caring, and it's really a holistic approach - it's about the mind and body.' At the end of the first week, Sue lost over eight pounds. She improved her triathlon time by over 30 minutes. She even climbed one of the intermediate/advanced hills on her final day. 'My confidence has grown too,' she says. 'It's amazing what you can do in just two weeks.' Sue made the choice to come to Wellfit because she needed a change. She's found new tools and habits she can bring back to her life in Iowa. 'I feel like I'm free,' she says. 'I still have a lot of work to do, but now I've been given the support and knowledge to do it on my own.' 'Part of what this place does is heal the heart,' Sue adds. 'I lost myself before, and found myself here.' Dallas resident Tracy Kaye came to Wellfit as a breast cancer survivor of two years, having gone through a year of chemotherapy and a double mastectomy. 'I came here to recapture that spirit that I lost at that time,' she says. At first, Tracy didn't know if she could do the program - she didn't like the idea of competition. 'But I found out it was not about anyone else,' she says. 'It's all about trying to exceed your own personal best.' 'The days got easier and easier,' she adds. 'I felt I was cared for and given so much personal attention. It was always: What can we do to make you successful in your lifestyle? It's customized, livable, easy to implement.' Tracy will be back to Wellfit in September and November, already booked in advance, for some more 'me time,' and to reconnect with her new friends. She leaves feeling confident and happy. 'I came here and realized I always had it,' she says. 'Now I draw from that strength to always use it, and I leave here feeling empowered.' Eva Misle, a singer/songwriter from Los Angeles, didn't come to Wellfit Malibu to lose weight (although she lost weight). She didn't come to make friends (although she found two of the closest friends of her life). She didn't come for the fitness classes or hikes or life coaching sessions (although those are some of her favorite things). She didn't come for a reboot or a recharge. 'I came here for a new start,' she says. Eva considers herself a binge eater. 'I could have a bad day, or I could simply be hungry - and food will make me feel better,' she says. She's been to several programs to help her. 'I've been in a residential treatment center. I go to Overeaters Anonymous. I've picked up many new habits - tools, education, awareness - from these places,' she says. 'But it wasn't until I found Wellfit that I started to really redefine my relationship with food, and overall health.' At Wellfit, Eva focuses on her overall wellness - nutrition, exercise, thinking right. 'I've found a community that understands what I'm going through, and is giving me an amazing team of support,' she says. Before she left the resort, Eva made a plan with Wellfit's nutrition director, Rebekah Blakely, to stay in contact, continuing the 'food conversation' as Eva re-enters her life back home in Los Angeles. Eva's goals away from Wellfit include training again in muay thai and jui jitsu (she's a big Ronda Rousey fan), getting into the best shape of her life, and continuing to 'redefine her relationship to food.' 'I'm finally getting my life back on track, and I leave Wellfit with a new confidence,' she says. (more...)

Though MSMT has always offered children's theatre as part of its summer season, this Shrek distinguishes itself in its exuberant and deliciously talented young cast, its impressive production values, and its decision to address the show to a broader family audience. To see toddlers and grandparents, the literally-young and young-at-heart all relishing the energetic performance was an absolute delight! (more...)

YOU-TURN Named Amazon BestsellerYOU-TURN Named Amazon Bestseller
by BWW News Desk - Aug 18, 2015

'You-Turn: Changing Direction in Midlife' (June 2008) recently achieved #1 Amazon Bestseller status. Dr. Nancy Irwin, a Los Angeles-based doctor of psychology and clinical hypnotist, wrote this self-help non-fiction book to inspire others that it is never too late to live A Life you love. This collection of 'over 40 stories of people over 40' chronicles successful transitions in people's personal and/or professional lives. Originally from Atlanta, where she trained as an opera singer, Dr. Irwin moved to New York City in 1985 to pursue a career as a stand-up comedian. She worked all over the country and abroad, and moved to L.A. in 1994 when she heard that Hollywood needed more blondes. She quips: 'The road from comedy to mental health is very short, indeed.' Dr. Nancy experienced an epiphany when she began volunteering for a shelter for sexually abused children. It changed her life, and prompted her to pursue a doctorate in psychology and to specialize in the prevention and healing of child sexual abuse. You-Turn not only shares her own story, but also 43 other you-turns from a variety of people - some simple, some dramatic: a convicted crack dealer who became a real estate investor, a mother of nine who started a foundation for the leprosy-affected, a monk who became a motivational speaker, a recovering pedophile, a man who became a spouse and parent after 40, a woman who finally embraced her sexual identity after years of denial and abuse, and more. The stories are divided into two parts: change by default (injury, break-up, lay-off, etc.) and change by choice (boredom, lack of fulfillment, etc). Like a Chicken Soup for the Soul for Baby Boomers, this book is for the fearful and frozen...anyone who feels stuck in struggle yet really wants to move forward. Dr. Irwin states: 'I've included some professional tips on navigating change at any age, but the emphasis of the book is on the stories told in first person. Everyone can identify with one or more of the stories in this book. I did not want to write an academic 'do-this-in-order-to-feel-that' book, because what has helped me reinvent myself so many times was seeing real-life people do amazing things. I figured if they could do it, why couldn't I? It is my hope that we all begin seeing you-turns everywhere, so they become the rule rather than the exception. Twenty- and thirty-somethings especially can benefit from these stories so they will feel free to explore, question choices, and change directions, to avert what used to be called a 'middle age crisis.' We now call it a middle age blaze!' Available on Amazon.com. (more...)
