by Elizabeth Peterson-Vita - Nov 26, 2014

In a holiday season crowded with just about every version of Dickens' classic imaginable, you can count on Trustus Theatre to stage a production that is totally fresh, modern, and compelling. Running at Trustus' main stage through December 20, this adaptation is penned by Patrick Barlow, who famously created the stage version of THE 39 STEPS, an astonishing piece requiring a few actors to play myriad characters in a sly, deft script that is overtly theatrical and physical. Barlow's touch is clearly apparent in his treatment of Dickens, as here we see one actor (Stann Gwynn) playing Ebenezer Scrooge, while four other actors (Scott Herr, Catherine Hunsinger, Avery Bateman, and Kendrick Marion) play all the other roles. In this season of ubiquitous productions of A Christmas Carol, a production of Lionel Bart's Oliver! comes as a welcome Dickensian alternative. South Portland's Lyric Music Theater has mounted a very respectable revival of Bart's 1960 musical based on Oliver Twist. A curious but catchy melange of dark drama and vaudeville, Oliver! survives in its trio of principal characters, Fagin, Nancy, and Sykes, and the memorable music Bart has written for them. (more...)

BWW Reviews: The Guthrie Theater and Lyric Arts Present Two Different Versions of the Heartwarming A CHRISTMAS CAROLBWW Reviews: The Guthrie Theater and Lyric Arts Present Two Different Versions of the Heartwarming A CHRISTMAS CAROL
by Jill Schafer - Nov 23, 2014

Charles Dickens' novella A Christmas Carol has become a staple of holiday traditions. It shouldn't be surprising, then, that this classic story can currently be seen on multiple stages in the Twin Cities. The biggest of these is the Guthrie Theater; this is the 40th year that the Guthrie has produced A Christmas Carol. I think it's safe to say this is one of their most popular shows every year, with many families incorporating it into their annual traditions. Lyric Arts is also producing the show on their Main Street Stage in Anoka. I was lucky enough to see these two different interpretations of this classic story on back-to-back nights. And while I do have a clear favorite between the two, it's really unfair to compare them too closely. Both are entertaining and creative interpretations of Charles Dickens' heartwarming story about the rich-in-money poor-in-friends businessman who learns through the visitation of four ghosts that it's better to be kind than rich.
