Guy Fieri Hosts New Bracket-Style Culinary Competition Series TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS
by Sarah Jae Leiber - Jan 23, 2020

It's madness on Food Network this March as Guy Fieri hosts and executive produces an all new culinary competition where 16 of the nation's most celebrated chefs face-off on Tournament of Champions, premiering on Wednesday, March 4th at 10pm with a supersized 90-minute episode stuffed with edge-of-your-seat action. During the five-part tournament, the chefs' skills will be pushed to the limit, as they go head-to-head in a single elimination bracket-style competition, where a randomizer machine determines the protein, produce, equipment, cooking style, and time for each of the cook-offs. The pressure is on and emotions are high throughout this unpredictable tournament, as the elite chefs enter this blind competition not knowing who their opponents will be, or what cooking challenges they will face. The intensity increases in each sudden-death each round of the tournament as the coveted spots decrease from 16 to eight in the second round, then to four, until there are only two chefs in the final round.

The Theatre Work Week: StateraArts Calls For Industry-Wide Change
by Chloe Rabinowitz - Jan 15, 2020

StateraArts is calling for a fundamental shift in the American Theater: we need to transform the work-week. Statera posits that this call-to-action isn't about needing larger budgets or more time, but is centered on how we choose to treat each other. The theatre work force, like all work forces, must be treated with dignity and compassion. Odd hours, long hours, short breaks, and zero flexibility upholds an industry-wide ethos of expendability and maintains supremacy structures. Statera's call to action is an invitation to interrogate and disrupt outdated scheduling practices and implement humane work week processes that support everyone in the theatre work force.

Karen most graciously managed to squeeze in some time to answer some of my grounded questions.

Cody and Marshal From Hinder Announce New Project: Dangerous Hippies
by Abigail Charpentier - Nov 21, 2019

Hinder drummer Cody Hanson and frontman Marshal Dutton have announced a new project under the moniker Dangerous Hippies. The idea for the new band unofficially started in 2011 when the two were working as a songwriting/production partnership, before Marshall joined Hinder. They were approached to write a song for a commercial that was similar to The Black Keys. Once it was finished and they started to share the end result, the feedback from friends inspired them to continue. Cody Hansen says: 'We were very inspired and were having a blast, so we decided to write more in the same style. It seemed to come naturally and since it had a more raw feel, we could spend more time on writing and less time polishing in the studio.' Over the years the sound has grown and evolved into a mixture of several styles with elements of rock, pop, hip hop, folk and reggae letting the duo spread their songwriting wings beyond the active rock they are best known for.

The Kennedy Center Presents Mark Morris Dance Group In PEPPERLAND
by A.A. Cristi - Oct 15, 2019

Following their 2018 engagement, the esteemed Mark Morris Dance Group returns for the D.C. premiere of its latest evening-length work Pepperland, a Kennedy Center co-commission, November 13a?"16 in the Eisenhower Theater. Renowned choreographer Mark Morris continues to explore the relationship between movement and music with Pepperland, which pays homage to The Beatles's 1967 trailblazing album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Often hailed as the first-ever a?oeart rocka?? album, the Beatles's groundbreaking work pushed the recording-studio technology of the late 1960s to the limit and is widely regarded as the best rock n' roll album in history. Created at the request of the City of Liverpool, England, home of the founding band members, the colorful, exuberant Pepperland includes Morris's elements of humor and musicality. Of the work, Mark Morris stated, a?oeThis great album set a radical new direction for popular music and thought. I was just a child. Fifty years later, with contemporary eyes and ears, we are presenting a comment on, and a rethinking of, this profound cultural artifact with all of the imagination, surprise, humor, and bizarrity intact.a??

Strictly Arts Theatre Company Presents NOT BLACK AND WHITE
by Stephi Wild - Jun 7, 2019

Not Black and White explores the multiple pressures, both real and perceived, placed on women of colour through the eyes of a young woman trying - or not trying - for a baby. This new work from the creative team behind last year's sell out Fringe hit Freeman takes on the issues of colourism, ageism, interracial relationships, being a woman in the workplace and the pressures on women to have children - and pressures from family relating to home culture. As Remelle struggles to conform to "professional standards" of how to wear her hair, moderate her accent and limit her gestures in the workplace, her husband wrestles with his own feelings of inadequacy and his finite capacity to empathise with the issues he's never had to experience. Strictly Arts Theatre Company are returning to the Fringe as one of the Associate Artists at the Pleasance.

BWW Feature: Crafting a Revelation - Behind THE TAROT READING
by Jack Read - May 3, 2019

Two years ago, lying on a couch in the #9 Lounge at the Evening Star Cafe in Alexandria, VA, I was eulogized. I had watched other audience members receive secret family recipes, help rehearse a marriage proposal, even destroy a speed limit sign with a hammer. But the card I drew was Death. So, naturally, I was eulogized in front of the rest of the audience. The thing my funeral had in common with all these other short vignettes was the sense that, without my involvement, none of this could happen. I mattered. When it was done, I opened my eyes, took the flower offered to me, and found my seat. The oration was by Quill Nebeker, my Medium for the evening.

Hong Kong Repertory Theatre Presents PRIDE
by Stephi Wild - Mar 6, 2019

To drift is to float on top of a liquid, appearing still or moving in the direction of the liquid or wind. The term Gang Piao literally means drifting back and forth in Hong Kong, yet its exact definition is not certain are Gang Piao professionals who came to work in Hong Kong from the Mainland? Or are they students from the Mainland? Or tourists who came to Hong Kong to shop? Pride depicts protagonist Jason's struggles to find a place where he can settled down, despite having good academic qualifications, a job and a marriage in Hong Kong since moving from the Mainland many years ago. He continues to drift directionlessly from one place to another. What has Hong Kong actually given him? What can he establish for himself? Pride is another limit-testing work that challenges the bottom line by emerging playwright Wang Haoran, following his controversial Blast and Red Chamber in the Concrete Forest. The current production is directed by HKRep's Assistant Artistic Director Fung Wai Hang, starring a cast including Wang Wei, Lai Yuk Ching, Lau Shau Ching, Kong Ho Yin and Chan Kiu, running 16-31 March at the Hong Kong Arts Centre Shouson Theatre. Tickets are now available at URBTIX.
