Last year, Orlando's Mad Cow Theatre opened a powerful production of Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning play CLYBOURNE PARK, and while their version still holds up a year later, the environment in which we find ourselves in 2016 adds an extra level of resonance to Theatre UCF's production, running through October 2nd. This top-notch production is both beautifully staged and designed, and the cast provides nuanced performances of a script that constantly reveals new layers to be analyzed. American Theatre magazine, published by Theatre Communications Group (TCG), has released its annual October Season Preview issue, which includes lists of the Top 10 Most-Produced Plays and Top 20 Most-Produced Playwrights for the coming season. Robert Askins' Hand to God will be the most-produced play, with 13 total productions, and August Wilson will be the most-produced playwright, with 18 total productions. Last night two-time Tony Award-winner Viola Davis made history as the first African-American to win an Emmy in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category. She was recognized for her role as the brilliant attorney and professor Annalise Keating on the Shonda Rhimes drama HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER. In addition to her Emmy and Tonys, Davis has won three Drama Desks and three SAG Awards. During her acceptance speech, Davis quoted Harriet Tubman and talked about breaking boundaries and redefining what Hollywood thinks of as beautiful. (more...)

BWW Review: Classic RAISIN IN THE SUN at Rep Spotlights How Far We Haven't Come

There are certain plays out there that remain enduring classics. Maybe they're just that good. Or maybe they still pack a punch all these years later and resonate with attitudes of today. Well the Seattle Rep is presenting one on those classics with Lorraine Hansberry's "A Raisin in the Sun" and while it falls firmly into that first category of "just that good" unfortunately watching it last night I also felt how far we have and haven't come since it debuted in 1959 as many of the themes of inequality and prejudice on display are still all too prevalent today. AIN'T MISBEHAVIN' Returns to The Harlem Repertory Theatre

The Harlem Repertory Theatre is reviving the 1978 TONY award winning musical 'Ain't Misbehavin', for a very limited engagement from October 8th to March 25th at the Tato Laviera Theatre at Harlem Prep Elementary School, 240 East 123rd Street (at 3rd Ave.), Manhattan. A swinging, rip-roaring musical tribute to the black musicians of the Harlem Renaissance, 'Ain't Misbehavin' opened on Broadway in 1978 as a musical revue of Jazz Legend Fats Waller's popular songbook, and it ended up winning a number of awards including the TONY for Best Musical. The Harlem Repertory Theatre's production of 'Ain't Misbehavin', which sold out it's 2008 run and won the AUDELCO 2008 Musical Production of the Year Award, is now returning to the Harlem Rep's stage for its' 2016-17 season in a new intimate cabaret style that will bring the audience closer to the performers. This brilliant showcase of Fats Waller's magnificent songbook will have audiences dancing in the aisles as the HRT's finest company members sing the toe-tapping, hand-clapping songs: T'Ain't Nobody's Business, This Joint is Jumpin', Honeysuckle Rose, the title song, Ain't Misbehavin', and many more! Park Square continues its 42nd season on the Andy Boss Thrust Stage with Lorraine Hansberry's classic and timely A Raisin in the Sun. This fiercely moving portrait of a family living and dreaming on Chicago's South Side in the 1950s was the first play written by an African American woman to be produced on Broadway. The Washington Post hails it as "one of a handful of great American plays - it belongs in the inner circle, along with Death of a Salesman, Long Day's Journey Into Night and The Glass Menagerie."
