BWW Review: Who is Really the ACCOMPLICE, and What is Going On?BWW Review: Who is Really the ACCOMPLICE, and What is Going On?
by Shari Barrett - May 31, 2015

Martin Thompson directs Rupert Holmes' intriguing murder mystery ACCOMPLICE at Theater 40 with reverence to actors and what they go through to put on a play as well as to put up with each other. The first act seems like a fairly normal British offering with four characters all seemingly trying to outdo each other to gain control of the two husbands' mutual business by having affairs with each other in every possible combination. A particularly shocking revelation just prior to intermission will have you wondering just who is the accomplice trying to assist the perpetrator in getting away with murder. (more...)

BWW Reviews: JENNIFER SHEEHAN is 'Stardust' but Not Quite Golden in New Show at 54 BelowBWW Reviews: JENNIFER SHEEHAN is 'Stardust' but Not Quite Golden in New Show at 54 Below
by Alix Cohen - May 1, 2015

Evoking Rita Hayworth, a spot lit Jennifer Sheehan weaves through 54 Below towards the stage, long dark hair cascading above a body-skimming white gown replete with twinkling sequins. “I'll build a stairway to the stars . . .,” (Mitchell Parish/Matt Malneck/Frank Signorelli) she sings with stunning vocal clarity and investment that might conjure a Ziegfeld Girl. In her new show, Stardust: A Night in the Cosmos, Sheehan welcomes the “dreamers, romantics, stargazers, astrophysicists, and Trekkies” with “songs that flicker like the street lamps of eternity” with lyrics featuring stars, moons, and rose-colored hope. It's an appealing theme and one that suits the artist's fetching performance and transition from ingénue into a more mature cabaret entertainer. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Stray Dog Theatre's Riotous THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROODBWW Reviews: Stray Dog Theatre's Riotous THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD
by Chris Gibson - Apr 9, 2015

If you're looking at the program for THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD, see the name Rupert Holmes (book, music, and lyrics) and are instantly reminded of the fact he wrote and sang the number one hit 'Escape (The Pina Colada Song'), you'll probably be a bit surprised at the production that you're about to watch. But, I guarantee you it will be a very pleasant one, because Holmes takes the tradition of circa 1890's English Music Hall and uses it in delightfully imaginative fashion to craft a vehicle for the unfinished last work of classic author Charles Dickens. It's a kind of play within a play, and in the cozy confines of the Tower Grove Abbey, it's an absolutely perfect fit. It brings the performers right into your lap, and it's so much fun that you can't help but get completely caught up in the merriment. This lively production by Stray Dog Theatre is sure to please, so get your tickets while you can! (more...)

BWW Previews: TUTS Underground Presents the Sweet SWEET POTATO QUEENSBWW Previews: TUTS Underground Presents the Sweet SWEET POTATO QUEENS
by Katricia Lang - Apr 4, 2015

In late March (I'm bringing you up to the minute news), TUTS Underground staged the first ever reading of SWEET POTATO QUEENS. The piece put me in the mind of stories and movies like the DIVINE SECRETS OF THE YA-YA SISTERHOOD or SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS. Basically, anything with sister in it. That's no insult. Sandra Bullock in YA-YA is as good as Sandra in GRAVITY. I dare you to say otherwise. (more...)

Hillbarn Theatre to Close 2014-15 Season with CURTAINS, 5/7-31Hillbarn Theatre to Close 2014-15 Season with CURTAINS, 5/7-31
by BWW News Desk - Apr 2, 2015

Hillbarn Theatre, the Peninsula's premier community theatre company, concludes its 2014-2015 season with Kander and Ebb's award-winning musical, Curtains. From the creative team behind Chicago and Cabaret - and a book by Rupert Holmes - Curtains is a hilariously entertaining whodunit with a clever and contagiously catchy toe-tapping score. It's opening night at Boston's Colonial Theatre and the leading lady has mysteriously died on stage, leaving the cast and crew as suspects. Local detective Frank Cioffi, a theater fan and amateur actor, arrives to conduct the investigation. As the body count rises and secrets spill, Cioffi becomes more and more involved in saving the musical than solving the case. Curtains debuted on Broadway in 2007 and was nominated for eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book and Best Original Score. Curtains will run May 7 -31, 2015 at Hillbarn Theatre (1285 East Hillsdale Blvd., Foster City). Performances are Thursdays-Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Press night for Curtains will be on Friday, May 8, 2015. Single tickets range in price from $23 - $42 and are available now by calling 650.349.6411 ext. 2 or visiting www.hillbarntheatre.org. (more...)
