Internationally Renowned Kingston Trio to Headline The McCallum Theatre, 11/22Internationally Renowned Kingston Trio to Headline The McCallum Theatre, 11/22
by David Green - Oct 22, 2015

The City of Rancho Mirage and the McCallum Theatre present The Kingston Trio on Sunday, November 22, at 3:00pm. In 1957, America was ready for a new style of music. Just out of college, Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds and Dave Guard took folk music and gave it an irresistible comic twist. The music was rooted in American popular culture, but performed with a style that now seems timeless. When "Tom Dooley" went Gold in 1958, the folk revival was born, setting the stage for Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Peter Paul & Mary, The Byrds and the protest movement of the 60s. (more...)

BWW Review: The Mabel Mercer Foundation's 26th Annual Cabaret Convention Comes Home to Town Hall, Night Three, October 15BWW Review: The Mabel Mercer Foundation's 26th Annual Cabaret Convention Comes Home to Town Hall, Night Three, October 15
by Alix Cohen - Oct 17, 2015

For the third night of this year's Cabaret Convention at Town Hall, the uber-enthusiastic Karen Mason hosted Life Is a Cabaret (Directed by Barry Kleinbort) in celebration of long time collaborators, composer John Kander and lyricist Fred Ebb. Introduced to each other by their mutual music publisher in 1962, the team's first Broadway show was 1965's Flora the Red Menace in which Liza Minnelli made her Broadway debut and with which the three began a long association. Their last together (Kander is alive and hopefully writing), was 2015's The Visit starring Chita Rivera, a production Ebb (who died in 2004) unfortunately didn't live to see. Kander and Ebb's best known musicals are Cabaret and Chicago, both of which seem to run forever on popular appeal, but they wrote many others, a wide selection of which were represented at Thursday night's show. BWW Reviews: VANYA & SONIA & MASHA & SPIKE at Santa Paula Theater CenterBWW Reviews: VANYA & SONIA & MASHA & SPIKE at Santa Paula Theater Center
by Cary Ginell - Aug 2, 2015

Although I am not as familiar with the plays of Anton Chekhov as some, Christopher Durang's play, Vanya & Sonia & Masha & Spike, doesn't require a pop quiz of Chekhovian references in order for one to enjoy the show. This character study into the lives of three squabbling, middle-aged siblings has enough humor and poignancy in it so you don't have to have your SparkNotes handy to enjoy it. The play, produced by Leslie Nichols and directed by Fred Helsel, plays at the Santa Paula Theater Center through August 16. (more...)
