Broadway au Carre is celebrating its second anniversary this month! To celebrate in proper form such a special occasion, the series will feature the amazingly talented Isabelle Georges (Padam Padam, Titanic, Broadway en chante) in a program completely dedicated to the music of Tony award winning composer Maury Yeston (Nine, Titanic, Grand Hotel). Alongside singer Frederik Steenbrink and pianist Yann Ollivo, Isabelle Georges will perform Maury Yeston's song cycle 'December Songs' as well as excerpts from Titanic and Nine, as well as a song that the composer wrote especially for her. For the first musical of its 51st season, the Costa Mesa Playhouse presents 'Nine,' based on auteur Italian filmmaker Federico Fellini's Oscar-winning, semi-autobiographical masterpiece, '8˝.' With music and lyrics by Maury Yeston ('Titanic') and a book by acclaimed playwright Arthur Kopit ('Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mamma's Hung You in the Closet and I'm Feelin' So Sad'), this sultry and enchanting musical follows the life of world famous director Guido Contini as he prepares his latest picture and balances the numerous women in his life. Drifting toward a nervous breakdown, Contini falls into nostalgic reverie, eventually focusing on the formative sexual encounter of his life, which occurred at the age of nine. (more...)

Today in 1989, Grand Hotel opened at the Martin Beck Theatre (now the Al Hirschfeld Theatre) where it ran for 1017 performances. Grand Hotel is a musical with a book by Luther Davis and music and lyrics by Robert Wright and George Forrest, with additional lyrics and music by Maury Yeston. Based on the 1929 Vicki Baum novel and play, Menschen im Hotel (People in a Hotel), and the subsequent 1932 MGM feature film, the musical focuses on events taking place over the course of a weekend in an elegant hotel in 1928 Berlin and the intersecting stories of the eccentric guests of the hotel, including a fading prima ballerina; a fatally ill Jewish bookkeeper, who wants to spend his final days living in luxury; a young, handsome, but destitute Baron; a cynical doctor; and a typist dreaming of Hollywood success.
