Everyman Theatre will receive a congratulatory resolution from Baltimore City Councilman William "Pete" Welch for the company's work on its current production of Lynn Nottage's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Ruined. The cast and staff will receive the resolution from the Councilman on Wednesday, March 4th at 1:30PM at the theatre in the second floor lobby. (more...)

Everyman Theatre will host its next installment of The World of the Play panel discussion series on Saturday, March 7 at 5PM (rescheduled from February 21 due to the snow storm). The powerful discussion entitled 'You Will Not Fight Your Battles On My Body Anymore' will be inspired by the themes of Lynn Nottage's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Ruined, playing at Everyman now through March 8. Playwrights Horizons has announced casting for IOWA, the world premiere of a new musical play written by Susan Smith Blackburn Prize finalist Jenny Schwartz (God's Ear, Somewhere Fun), music by Todd Almond (Stage Kiss at PH, Kansas City Choir Boy, The Tempest, On the Levee) and lyrics by Mr. Almond and Ms. Schwartz. Directed by two-time Obie Award winner Ken Rus Schmoll (Red Dog Howls, Middletown, What Once We Felt; next season's just-announced Antlia Pneumatica by Anne Washburn at PH), the musical play will be the fifth production of the theater company's 2014/2015 Season. I want to applaud the theatre companies who pay homage to black playwrights. We're allowed to examine the psyche and social situations from the black perspective through these theatrical masterpieces. I had the pleasure of seeing The Pearl Theater's production of INTIMATE APPAREL written by Lynn Nottage, and I was moved by the seamless writing and performances by the cast. (more...)

There is much more to the play than Mama's turn as a sort of Auntie Mame-of-the-Ituri-rainforest. It is also the unflinching story of how, in the words of Salima, men wage war "on [women's] bodies." Particularly in contemporary warfare rape is a form of combat, aimed at destroying societies. The scene in Act Two where Salima describes what happened to her is not only uncomfortable, it is a display of raw theatrical power and a tutorial about the mechanics of social destruction in the wake of rape. The American Playwriting Foundation, established to make annual grants to new American plays, announced today The Relentless Award, the largest annual cash prize in American theater awarded to a playwright in recognition of a new play. Established in honor of Philip Seymour Hoffman and his pursuit of truth in the theater, The Relentless Award will honor an unproduced play with $45,000, laying the groundwork for the future of American Theater. The American Playwriting Foundation is now open for submissions, and the deadline is July 10, 2015. Three finalists and one winner will be announced on October 2, 2015. (more...)

The ?Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) is the recipient of a generous grant of $125,000 from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation (DDCF) through the foundation's new Theatre Commissioning and Production Initiative. The grant will support the production of playwright Lynn Nottage's Sweat and a future commission by Ms. Nottage. Sweat is commissioned through OSF's American Revolutions: the United States History Cycle and will premiere at OSF on August 2, 2015 and run through October 31. (more...)
