Alan Gilbert -- recently recognized with a Foreign Policy Association Medal for his extraordinary commitment to cultural diplomacy -- completes his sixth season at the helm of the New York Philharmonic with this week's U.S. premiere of director Côme de Bellescize's staging of Joan of Arc at the Stake, which stars Academy Award-winner Marion Cotillard (June 10–13). Next, he and the orchestra toast the summer with a trio of free concerts under the stars to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Philharmonic's historic Concerts in the Parks (June 17–24), using the same program as the centerpiece of their upcoming residencies at Colorado's Bravo! Vail (July 24–31), Santa Barbara's Music Academy of the West (Aug 1–8), and in Shanghai, China (July 4–10). Gilbert also makes his Mostly Mozart debut, leading the American stage premiere of George Benjamin's Written on Skin (Aug 11–15), and crowns an artistic residency at the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival with an account of Messiaen's epic and otherworldly Des canyons aux étoiles (Aug 23). Legendary trumpet-and-voice duo Herb Alpert and Lani Hall bring their unique mix of jazz, world and American pop music to Pacific Symphony for the final concert of the 2014-15 Pops Series. Joining musical forces in 2006, each half of this musical power couple brings an impressive résumé to the table. As a solo artist and leader of the Tijuana Brass, Alpert has sold more than 72 million records and placed 28 albums on the Billboard charts, including five at No. 1. His 2014 album, “Steppin' Out,” earned him his ninth Grammy Award, and in 2013, he was honored with the National Medal of Arts. His wife and music partner, Hall, rose to fame in 1966 as the lead singer of Sergio Mendes' group, Brasil '66. The two met and became friends when Brasil '66 was signed to A&M records by its co-founder, Alpert. Hall has the distinction of recording more than 22 albums in three different languages, four alongside her husband, and she earned a Grammy for her album, “Es Facil Amar.” (more...)

The New York Philharmonic's 2014 holiday season presents classic masterpieces and seasonal favorites, the return of a former Philharmonic principal and debuts, and continuing and new traditions. This year's schedule includes the annual Holiday Brass concert, this time with former Principal Trumpet Philip Smith returning to host and conduct the complete New York Philharmonic Brass and Percussion sections; Handel's Messiah, led by Baroque specialist Gary Thor Wedow; the first-annual Holidays with the Philharmonic, led by Constantine Kitsopoulos and featuring a carol sing-along and The Night Before Christmas, narrated by Academy Award winner and New York Philharmonic Board Member Whoopi Goldberg (December 19) and humorist, journalist, and actor Mo Rocca (December 20), both in their Philharmonic debuts; and New Year's Eve: A Gershwin Celebration led by Bramwell Tovey and featuring vocalists Dianne Reeves, in her Philharmonic debut, and Norm Lewis, returning after his debut in the Philharmonic's production of Show Boat. BUFFALO, NY - The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of JoAnn Falletta, is opening the 175th Erie County Fair with an 'American Voices' concert at 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 6. Many opportunities for photo and video exist during this day. The orchestra will rehearse for this concert from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Fair's Grandstand on August 6. Individual musicians will be available for appearances until 7 p.m. Please contact Kate Jenkins if you are interested in speaking with a musician. The concert begins at 8 p.m. at the Grandstand. It features music by Aaron Copland, Duke Ellington and Leroy Anderson, and concludes with a fireworks show. Contact Holly Smyczynski for site-related assistance. Photographers and videographers are welcome to shoot up to 30 minutes total during rehearsal and during the concert. Video used may represent up to a three-minute excerpt of one work or up to five minutes of multiple works. Photographers are asked to refrain from using flash at the evening concert. As Buffalo's cultural ambassador, the Grammy Award-winning Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra under the leadership of music director JoAnn Falletta presents more than 100 concerts each year. Since 1940, the orchestra's home has been Kleinhans Music Hall, a National Historic Landmark with a reputation as one of the finest concert halls in the United States. During the tenure of JoAnn Falletta, the BPO has rekindled its history of radio broadcasts and recordings, including the release of 29 new recordings on the Naxos and Beau Fleuve labels.
