On Monday, April 13th, the Theater People Podcast welcomes ROCKY and ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY star Andy Karl. Karl, who has previously been seen on Broadway in JERSEY BOYS, LEGALLY BLONDE, 9 TO FIVE, and others shot to stardom when he was cast in the title role of Ahrens and Flaherty's $17 million adaptation of the Sylvester Stallone film. Karl reflects on being cast in the role, the physical and emotional toll the role took on him, and the life and career altering journey the experience was for him. He also discusses his excitement to be working alongside Kristin Chenowith in Roundabout Theater Company's ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY (the first Broadway job for which he didn't have to audition), and tells hilarious stories about collaborating with his wife Orfea on the Jerry Mitchell helmed 2007 production of LEGALLY BLONDE. When one of the world's major opera houses announced its plans to present the best-known works of Broadway's Rodgers and Hammerstein over a five-season span, no one had reason to believe that the Lyric Opera of Chicago would present a 'Carousel' starring a slew of Broadway, television, opera and ballet stars alongside the cream of Chicago's theatrical and vocal talent (60 actors, singers and dancers in all), supported by an orchestra of 37 players, and all overseen by the same director and musical director who would bring 'The Sound of Music' and 'Peter Pan' to live television, Carrie Underwood, Christopher Walken and all. Carousel is the third Rodgers and Hammerstein musical to be presented as part of Lyric's American Musical Theater Initiative. The King and I and South Pacific follow in the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons, respectively. Past productions were Oklahoma! in the 2012-13 season and The Sound of Music in the 2013-14 season. Carousel runs Friday, April 10 through Sunday, May 3, 2015 (26 performances, including one preview and one student matinee) at the Civic Opera House, 20 N. Wacker Dr., Chicago. Tickets start at $29, and are available at lyricopera.org/carousel or at 312-827-5600. The official press opening for Carousel is Saturday, April 11 at 7pm. Roundabout Theatre Company (Todd Haimes, Artistic Director) presents a new Broadway production of the classic musical On the Twentieth Century starring Tony & Emmy Award winner Kristin Chenoweth, Golden Globe, SAG Award winner & Tony nominee Peter Gallagher, Tony nominee Andy Karl, Mark Linn-Baker, Tony winner Michael McGrath and Tony winner Mary Louise Wilson. On the Twentieth Century is choreographed by Tony winner Warren Carlyle and directed by six-time Tony nominee Scott Ellis, and features music by Cy Coleman, and book & lyrics by Betty ComdenandAdolph Green. On the Twentieth Century is based on plays by Ben Hecht, Charles MacArthur & Bruce Millholland. The original Broadway production was directed by Harold Prince. As BroadwayWorld previously reported, Roundabout Theatre Company's Broadway production of On the Twentieth Century now technically opens on Sunday, March 15, 2015, as a result of Peter Gallagher missing a week of performances due to a sinus infection. Sickness didn't stop the show however, and the company celebrated their opening on the originally planned March 12- last night!
