THE FABULOUS INVALID to Launch 'ReGroup Reads' Series, 1/26THE FABULOUS INVALID to Launch 'ReGroup Reads' Series, 1/26
by BWW News Desk - Jan 19, 2015

There has always been something threatening to kill the theatre. Long before 49 producers were needed to mount a show, reality stars hit the boards, or 42nd Street became Disney-fied... And even long before Andrew Lloyd Webber, the same constant revivals, or premium ticket prices... It was a countless list of other events daring to put the theatre six feet under. The theatre community's constant fear of these other diabolical dilemmas: from the caustic critic, the invention of the automobile, burlesque, union strikes, the 'talkies' and more are cleverly skewered as only Moss Hart & George S. Kaufman could in The Fabulous Invalid. Their 1938 'valentine' to the theatre's resilience is the first reading in ReGroup Theatre's new monthly series 'ReGroup Reads: The Greatest American Playwrights.' (more...)

BWW Jr: YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOUBWW Jr: YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU
by Erin Leigh Peck - Dec 22, 2014

There's something refreshing about bringing your family to see Broadway shows that inherently and organically appeal to modern day kids. Not that I'm not a huge supporter of bringing your kids to see ALADDIN or LION KING! It's natural to reserve our precious ticket-buying dollars for musicals that are designed for families, and any junior Broadway fan would be lucky to enjoy those kinds of shows. But rarely do parents have an opportunity to bring their kids to a classic American comedy that brings to the stage a bit of theatrical history and a story that can entertain kids and parents alike without pandering to the family market. STAGE TUBE: On This Day 11/28- MERRILY WE ROLL ALONGSTAGE TUBE: On This Day 11/28- MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG
by Stage Tube - Nov 28, 2014

Today in 1981, Merrily We Roll Along closed at the Alvin Theatre (now the Neil Simon Theatre), where it ran for 16 performances. Merrily We Roll Along is a musical with a book by George Furth and lyrics and music by Stephen Sondheim. It is based on the 1934 play of the same name by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart. Furth and Sondheim retained the basic structure and overall theme of the play but updated it to encompass the period from 1957 to 1976. The story revolves around Franklin Shepard who, having once been a talented composer of Broadway musicals, has now abandoned his friends and his songwriting career to become a producer of Hollywood flicks. Like the play, the musical begins at the height of his Hollywood fame and moves backwards in time, showing snapshots of the most important moments in Frank's life that shaped the man that he is today.
