The upcoming Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman's Pulitzer Prize-winning play You Can't Take It With begins previews on August 26, 2014, at the Longacre Theatre (220 West 48th Street), with an opening night set for September 28, 2014. The production will be directed by six-time Tony Award-nominee and Drama Desk Award winner Scott Ellis (The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Twelve Angry Men, 1776) and will play a 19-week limited engagement. The New York Humane Society and the show's Animal Trainer, Bill Berloni just brought kittens over to the rehearsal studio for Scott and select cast members to find the right ones for the roles of the two kittens in the show. New York City Center's 2014-15 season features an exciting lineup of dance and musical theater that begins with the 11th season of City Center's acclaimed Fall for Dance Festival. The Festival features 24 acclaimed dance companies and artists from around the world, and will kick off in September with two free dance performances at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park in association with The Public Theater, followed by five unique programs at City Center in October. The Band Wagon, an Encores! Special Event starring Brian Stokes Mitchell, follows in November, and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, City Center's Principal Dance Company, returns for a month-long engagement in December. Kaufman's Pulitzer Prize-winning play You Can't Take It With You and The Humane Society of New York are pleased to announce a new partnership to support the adoption of kittens that will be used in the show. Brian Stokes Mitchell to Lead THE BAND WAGON for Encores! This November

Tony Award winner Brian Stokes Mitchell will star in The Band Wagon, an Encores! Special Event based on the classic MGM movie of the same title, from November 6 - 16, 2014 at City Center. The show has a book by Douglas Carter Beane adapted from the screenplay by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, with music by Arthur Schwartz and lyrics by Howard Dietz. The Band Wagon will be directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Kathleen Marshall with music direction by Todd Ellison. The Band Wagon will run for 12 performances, by special arrangement with Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures. (more...)

New Opera Based on George S. Kaufman's DINNER AT EIGHT Set for St. Paul in 2016

Last month, the Minnesota Opera announced its commission of Dinner at Eight, a new comic opera by composer William Bolcom and librettist Mark Campbell, based on the play by George S. The cast will include: Will Brill (Act One) as Ed Carmichael, Fran Kranz (Death of a Salesman) as Tony Kirby, Johanna Day (August: Osage County) as Mrs. Kirby, Nick Corley (The Mystery of Edwin Drood), Austin Durant (War Horse) and Joe Tapper (Witnessed By The World, 59 E 59) as the three G-Men as well as Barrett Doss, Ned Noyes, Pippa Pearthree as understudies. The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Gives The Minnesota Opera's New Works Initiative a $750,000 Gift

Minnesota Opera has been awarded a three-year, $750,000 gift from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation that will support the upcoming commissions of The Manchurian Candidate, The Shining, and Dinner at Eight. The gift marks both the completion of the first $7 million New Works Initiative (NWI) fundraising campaign and the beginning of a bold new phase of the Initiative, and brings total support of the NWI from the Mellon Foundation to $2 million.
