The American Romanian Cultural Society (ARCS) pays homage to one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century: Romanian born Dinu Lipatti.  On April 27, 2017 at 7pm Benaroya Hall's acoustically rich Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall hosts this very special 100th anniversary musical celebration. Lipatti fulfilled a startling variety of roles - pianist, composer, teacher and critic -before his untimely death from cancer at age 33. Posthumously elected to the Romanian Academy, Lipatti brought outstanding contributions to classical music interpretation and composition. His pianism demonstrated an ideal synthesis of a composer's analytical insight and expressive inwardness. Internationally acclaimed violinist and pianist Alexandru Tomescu (violin) and Angela Draghicescu (piano) pay tribute to Dinu Lipatti in an exquisite chamber concert featuring works by Beethoven, Bach, Bartok and Gershwin as well as the Seattle premiere of Dinu Lipatti's rarely performed Sonatina for Violin and Piano. After a lavishly praised star turn in Washington National Opera's revival of Dead Man Walking this winter, Grammy Award-winning mezzo-soprano Susan Graham turns to a U.S. tour in April of her equally successful and wide-ranging recital program, “Frauenliebe und -leben: Variations,” inspired by and centered on Schumann's iconic song cycle, with longtime recital partner Malcolm Martineau. She also joins a cast of the world's greatest opera luminaries to celebrate the Metropolitan Opera House's 50 Years at Lincoln Center in an Anniversary Gala; performs selections from Mahler's Des Knaben Wunderhorn with the Met Orchestra and Esa-Pekka Salonen in Carnegie Hall; and sings Berlioz's La mort de Cléopâtre, a staple of her signature French repertoire, with the San Antonio Symphony. The Pasadena Symphony closes out its 2016-2017 Singpoli Classics Serieswith Beethoven Symphony No. 9 on April 29 with both matinee and evening performances at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. at Ambassador Auditorium. The New York Choral Society (NYCHORAL) under the direction of its Music Director David Hayes will give the New York Premiere of celebrated Scottish composer James MacMillan's St. Luke Passion. NYCHORAL will be joined by organist Jason Roberts as well as the remarkable Brooklyn Youth Chorus under Artistic Director Dianne Berkun Menaker. James MacMillan's St. Luke Passion, written in 2013, is the second of four planned works, each based on one of the Gospels which aim to approach the differing passion accounts from contrasting stylistic per-spectives. Hoff-Barthelson Music School's Annual Benefit Recital and Reception, the School's largest fundraising event of the year, takes place on Sunday, April 23, 2017, and features a recital by Carol Wincenc, one of today's greatest flutists, accompanied by the brilliant, young pianist Bryan Wagorn. Wincenc and Wagorn will perform works by Copland, Mozart, Debussy, and Fauré. Hoff-Barthelson flute students, faculty and alumni will join the pair for the final number—a lively baroque concerto for five flutes that will showcase Hoff-Barthelson's musical community at its finest. The event will be held in the recital hall of the CV Rich Mansion, a gorgeous Italianate Villa and begins with an intimate pre-concert reception for ticket holders at the Sponsor and Benefactor levels. Funds raised ensure that Hoff-Barthelson can continue to provide the very best music education to our students and guarantee that our programs remain accessible through financial aid and outreach. BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL is a jukebox musical that tells the story of the early life and career of Carole King with a book by Douglas McGrath, using songs that she wrote, often together with Gerry Goffin, and other contemporary songs by Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil, Phil Spector and others. The original production received its world premiere in San Francisco in October of 2013, and made its Broadway debut at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre in January 2014.
