Stunning costumes by the creative design team of Michael Bottari and Ronald Case have been worn by many famous actors in nearly as many theatrical productions from Broadway to national tours. This fall, their work is showcased in Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre's production of the Lerner and Loewe classic, Camelot.

"These beautiful costumes were created for the National Tour of Camelot starring Richard Harris," said Doug Stark, owner of Beef & Boards, who plays King Arthur in the local production on stage starting Sept. 7.

Bottari and Case have designed costumes for Broadway shows including Rodgers and Hammerstein's State Fair and Prince of Central Park on Broadway, plus five Off-Broadway shows. Their artistic creations spanned the country and beyond in the National Tours of I Do! I Do! with Lucie Arnaz, Shenandoah with Ed Ames, Man of La Mancha with Richard Kiley, the 25th Anniversary of The King and I with Yul Brynner, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum with Mickey Rooney, Damn Yankees with Dick VanDyke, and of course the legendary Camelot with Richard Harris, to name a few.

"We decided on a more earthy look to the somewhat fictional story - which has been done in several periods - using the best of these periods," Bottari stated. "The music always determines the style to use, and a more Gothic approach appealed to us.

"The Arthur legends go back much earlier, but the clothes would look too drab or Druid to sing those songs," he added. "Guinevere would look like a nun."

Bottari and Case have earned several Drama Desk Award nominations. Their work also won Lucille Lortel Awards for outstanding costume design for Die Mommie Die! in 2008 and Shanghai Moon in 2003.

Using Bottari and Case's costumes allows Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre's resident costumer to concentrate on the wardrobe demands of the following show, the debut of White Christmas, opening Oct. 14.

"It's one of America's favorite holiday stories. It's a movie that I, like so many, grew up watching," Brian Horton, Beef & Boards costumer said. "Plus it's a great time period. I especially look forward to designing the beautiful gowns."

Based on the T.H. White Arthurian fantasy novel "The Once and Future King," Camelot tells the famous tale of King Arthur, his queen Guenevere, Merlyn the magician, Lancelot and the Knights of the Round Table. There are 39 performances of Camelot scheduled in the intimate space of Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre through Oct. 10. Tickets range from $35 to $58, and include Chef Odell Ward's specially prepared buffet, with a fruit & salad bar, unlimited coffee, tea and lemonade. Parking is free.

For reservations, call the Beef & Boards Box Office at 317.872.9664. Box office hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays.
