The 2016 High School Drama Festival Main Festival
will take place from 15 - 18 August

Artscape is delighted to announce the 13 competition finalists from the most recently held High School Drama Mini Festivals that witnessed the participation of 36 schools across the Western Cape Province.

The 2016 High School Drama Festival was initiated and coordinated by Artscape's School Liaison Unit with funding by the HCI Foundation and Die Burger. It aims to promote social cohesion, good citizenship and empowerment through the arts.

Thokozile Ntshinga, Director of Artscape Audience Development and Education comments:

The High School Drama Festival is aimed at giving learners a platform to voice their creativity, views and social concerns through drama on a professional stage to a captive audience. experience broadens their horizons by experiencing the magic of live theatre, professional lighting and sound thereby enabling them to learn how essential these elements are to being a professional performer.

This year's Main Festival will be adjudicated by Professor Johan Van Der Merwe, Bulelwani Mabutyana and Ilne Fourie who will be tasked to select the winners in the following categories: Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Script, Best Director, Best Production, Best innovative Technical and Adjudicators Award.

The High School Drama Festival 2016 finalists are: UBULUMKO from Masibambane High School in Bloekombos, Kraaifontein), IDENTITY from Chris Hani Arts and Culture School in Makhaza, Khayelitsha, CONTRASTS - SOUTH AFRICA THE LAND OF CONTRASTS from Immaculata Girls High in Wittebome, TEEN ID from Imhoff Waldorf High School in Sunnydale, SOCIAL INJUSTICE from Ikhwezilesizwe Drama Group in Khayelitsha, EVOKE from Sinenjongo High School in Milnerton, SATIRICAL VIEW OF PARLIAMENT from Settlers High School in Bellville, LONG WALK from Ithemba Theatre Organisation in Kraaifontein, GEKETTING from Goliath Davids Arts Academy in Heidelberg, RECOGNIZING THE MIRROR from Table View High School in Table View, DO I CARE? from Khwela Community Project in Khayelitsha, VOICELESS from South African Education and Environment Projects in Mowbray and REASONS FOR BEGGING AT TRAFFIC LIGHTS IN SOUTH AFRICA from Rhenish Girls High School in Stellenbosch.

The finalists will spend four action packed days at the High School Drama Main Festival, where they will present their extraordinary drama projects to a panel of adjudicators aimed at broadening their skills from 15-18 August 2016. At the end of the competition, the winners will be announced at a gala awards ceremony where they will receive their prizes on 20 August 2016.
