Review: BBC PROMS: THE PLANETS AND STAR WARS, Royal Albert Hall
by Debbie Gilpin - August 10, 2025
“Do, or do not. There is no try.” On this occasion, the National Youth Orchestra chose to ‘do’, as they took on some of the most iconic orchestral music of the 20th century. The teenage ensemble were very keen to perform Gustav Holst’s Planets, and so it was quite natural that a suite of music from the Star Wars films should follow; the first performance at the Proms of Caroline Shaw’s The Observatory was chosen as a natural bridge between the two. This was kimono-clad conductor Dalia Stasevska’s first time working with the National Youth Orchestra - her natural enthusiasm proved a great match for their youthful exuberance.

Review: PEAKY BLINDERS: THE REDEMPTION OF THOMAS SHELBY, Sadler's Wells
by Franco Milazzo - August 08, 2025
From the moment the curtain raises and smoke billows away to reveal a barely lit stage, it’s clear that Rambert’s The Redemption of Thomas Shelby isn’t interested in gently inviting you in and asking how you take your tea. If anything, this is a rough kidnap of the senses, dumping you into a World War I battleground in a way that makes the opening to Saving Private Ryan look like a trip to Tesco.
Review: ROMEO & JULIET, Stratford East
by Cindy Marcolina - August 08, 2025
Two joints, both alike in dignity: Monty’s Tacos and Caps Bar. The high street isn’t big enough for the rival families. Shakespeare’s tale of young love and civil bloodshed comes alive in a gripping community-oriented rendition at Stratford East. Adapted by Kwame Owusu and co-directed by Emily Ling Williams and Malik Nashad Sharpe (who also choreographed it), it sees a staggering 38-strong cast of professional performers alongside young artists from the venue’s own training program and representatives of the public. The result is a fresh, energetic, galvanising production infused with music and dance that digs into the more romantic side of the play to deliver an excessively naive interpretation. It’s a springboard for many members of the acting company, but the vision lacks stability.

The Pitchfork Disney will mark the fifth collaboration between myself and Philip Ridley, including our production of Leaves of Glass, and Copper Beeches - a world premiere of Phil’s newest play. There’s a deep and personal resonance for me with Phil’s imagination, and a mutual respect between us both; it’s become a relationship I’ve enjoyed immensely over the years.

Review: BEETHOVEN: I SHALL HEAR IN HEAVEN, Opera Holland Park
by Clementine Scott - August 07, 2025
This is a great opportunity to hear the breadth of Beethoven’s work performed in a novel way, and the drama does have its flashes of brilliance. In order to preserve these fleeting moments of conviction, though, Beethoven: I Shall Hear in Heaven needs to move away from tired biographical tropes and allow the composer’s music to speak for itself.
