The non-stop comic journey of Afro Jo…An African American “everyman” as he travels from adolescence to adulthood in search of the ultimate state of “hip”, a place of comfort and peace in an ever confusing and changing world…a fast paced journey crossing bounds of race, class and gender. After 30 cities and an off Broadway run Wizard of Hip returns almost 30 years later. A little greyer, a little older, and hopefully a little wiser, but still crackling with the revelatory journey that made it an audience favorite more than two decades ago. Two back-up singers, a keyboard and percussion help Afro Jo tell his story.
"Tom Jones is a theatrical wizard."
What the Critics are Saying about Wizard of Hip
“bucket loads of amazing life-observations…no one delivers lightning bolts of truth like Jones…the “Lady Doo Wops” Jasmine Eileen Coles and Kanysha Williams add excitement and crackling energy for their whomping and hip-thrusting charged opening, offering commentary, depicting various characters, gorgeous vocals and facial expressions to die for… delightfully delicate touches of William Knowles…as he mixes groovy old classics with original jazz riffs…I see glimpses of Sammy Davis Jr. and Maurice Hines in Jones’s comfort level with being onstage and even a flicker of Dave Chappelle in his no-holds barred delivery…His rapid fire monologues are filled with imagination and gorgeous poetry. Jones is a Work of Art and a Piece of Work…Wizard of Hip is a kind of time capsule glimpse of who we were and from whence we’ve come through the zany mind of one of the most talented and creative performers around.” Debbie Minter Jackson, DCTheatreScene.com
