On Sunday and Monday nights, Broadway/television star Anita Gillette had a ball celebrating Irving Berlin. Of course, she sang many Berlin standards, and a few unearthed gems. But that's not what made the evening extra-special. You see, Anita had a real-life friendship with the composer. It all started during the creation of a Broadway show called Mr. President, written by Berlin, and starring Gillette.
The production was the beginning of a precious father-daughter relationship that lasted decades. Anita's new show, "Me & Mr. B" was filled with insider stories and memories of fly-on-the-wall conversations. The director of the show was Barry Kleinbort, musical director was Paul Greenwood, Penny Fuller duetted beautifully, and David L. Harris, sang, tromboned and brought N'awlins razzle dazzle to the event.
The Broadway at Birdland concert series takes place every week on the stage of the historic music room, located at 315 West 44 Street, in the heart of Manhattan's Theater District.
