Defiant (1962) e Zulu (1964). Voltou-se para a direção com sua primeira produção, D.H. Lawrence's A Collier's Friday Night, no The Royal Court Theatre em 1965. 

Gill ingressou no The Royal Court Theatre como assistente de direção em 1964 e tornou-se diretor associado em 1970. Durante seu mandato, recebeu aclamação por reviver três peças negligenciadas de D.H. Lawrence, incluindo The Daughter-in-Law, The Widowing of Mrs. Holroyd e A Collier's Friday Night. Dirigiu produções notáveis, incluindo Joe Orton's The Ruffian on the Stair, Edward Bond's The Fool e Webster's The Duchess of Malfi. Suas próprias primeiras peças, The Sleepers' Den e Over Gardens Out, estrearam no Royal Court em 1969.

Em 1976, Gill tornou-se Diretor Artístico do Riverside Studios em Londres.
