El dramaturgo y director Peter Gill fallece a los 86 años

BroadwayWorld lamenta informar que el dramaturgo y director Peter Gill ha fallecido a los 86 años. Gill comenzó su carrera como actor entre 1957 y 1965, incluyendo apariciones en cine en H.M.S. Defiant (1962) y Zulu (1964). Se inclinó por la dirección con su primera producción, A Collier's Friday Night de D.H. Lawrence, en el Royal Court Theatre en 1965. 

Gill se unió al Royal Court Theatre como asistente de dirección en 1964 y llegó a ser director asociado en 1970. Durante su etapa, ganó reconocimiento por revivir tres obras olvidadas de D.H. Lawrence, incluyendo The Daughter-in-Law, The Widowing of Mrs. Holroyd y A Collier's Friday Night. Dirigió producciones notables como The Ruffian on the Stair de Joe Orton, The Fool de Edward Bond y The Duchess of Malfi de Webster. Sus propias primeras obras, The Sleepers' Den y Over Gardens Out, se estrenaron en el Royal Court en 1969.

En 1976, Gill se convirtió en director artístico de Riverside Studios en Londres. Inauguró el recién convertido centro de artes con As You Like It antes de dirigir producciones de su adaptación de The Cherry Orchard de Chejov, Measure for Measure y Julius Caesar de Shakespeare, así como The Changeling de Thomas Middleton y William Rowley.

Gill se unió al National Theatre como director asociado en 1980, cargo que mantuvo hasta 1997. En 1984, fundó el National Theatre Studio. En el National, dirigió un amplio repertorio que incluyó A Month in the Country de Turguénev, Don Juan de Molière, Much Ado About Nothing de Shakespeare, Danton's Death de Büchner, Major Barbara de Shaw, Tales from Hollywood de Christopher Hampton, Fool for Love de Sam Shepard, Mrs. Klein de Nicholas Wright, Juno and the Paycock de Seán O'Casey y Luther de John Osborne, junto con estrenos de varias de sus propias obras.

Como dramaturgo, las obras principales de Gill incluyen Small Change, Kick for Touch, In the Blue, Mean Tears, Cardiff East, Certain Young Men, The York Realist, Original Sin, Lovely Evening, Another Door Closed, Versailles, As Good a Time as Any y Something in the Air. The York Realist fue revivida por The Donmar Warehouse y Sheffield Crucible en 2018. También escribió adaptaciones de clásicos, incluyendo The Cherry Orchard, The Seagull y Uncle Vanya de Chejov, As I Lay Dying de William Faulkner y Touch and Go y The Merry-Go-Round de D.H. Lawrence.
