Mark of a Woman, created and performed by Deaf performance artist Chisato Minamimura, explores tattooing culture as a lens through which to examine the expectations and constraints society places on women's bodies across cultures and generations. Drawing on her own lived experiences, Minamimura asks whether we can ever escape the marks others place upon us, and what it means to reclaim the power to mark ourselves. The production combines Visual Vernacular, ASL, digital animation, kinetic projection, and Woojer technology to reframe tattooing as both a personal and political act. Making its Canadian premiere at Theatre Passe Muraille Backspace, the work is accessible for Deaf audiences and runs approximately 60 minutes.
