Review: DIAL 'M' FOR MURDER at The Repertory Company of St. Louis
by Steve Callahan - September 23, 2024
DIAL 'M' FOR MURDER is surely one of the most perfect productions I’ve seen at The Rep in some years. Jordan Coughtry plays Tony, the scheming husband. His performance is from the Realm of Ideal Forms. It is that perfect!
Review: AMERICAN IDIOT at The Marcelle Theater
by Rob Levy - September 22, 2024
iAmerican Idiot is a brazen rock opera in the vein of The Who’s Tommy. The music is urgent, incendiary and, at times, regretful and poignant. Green Day’s punk rock ethos evokes reflection on the role of societal pressures and personal introspection.

Review: SATE Presents the World Premiere of Shualee Cook's TEMPEST IN A TEAPOT at The Chapel
by James Lindhorst - September 19, 2024
Director Rachel Tibbetts takes 20-year-old Alice back down the rabbit hole in Slightly Askew Theatre Ensemble’s (SATE) world premiere of Shualee Cook’s TEMPEST IN A TEAPOT. Tibbetts has created a magical world of make-believe for Alice to revisit her past while confronting her future. Everything about the exaggerated whimsical world is fantasy come to life at the eternal tea party. As is often the case with recontextualized works of the classics, the play-within-a-play convention of TEMPEST IN A TEAPOT can become a bit convoluted in its complicatedness. Tibbetts’ vision and the cast’s execution of the material is highly entertaining, however those with limited or no exposure to The Tempest could be left behind in the storytelling.

Review: TRAYF at The New Jewish Theatre is a Delightful Buddy Romp
by James Lindhorst - September 13, 2024
New Jewish Theatre’s TRAYF is a delight. The remarkable chemistry between Miller and Schmidt is reminiscent of the great comedic acting duos from the buddy comedies of the past. Their contagious energy makes their portrayals of Schulmy and Zalmy endearing and irresistible. The realism that Sparks and his team bring to the production is commendable and creates enjoyable and believable storytelling. TRAYF is a wonderfully warm and winning comedy about friendship, love, and faith.

Review: BLUES IN THE NIGHT at The Black Rep
by Steve Callahan - September 09, 2024
Ron Himes’ amazing Black Rep company is opening its 48th season with a piece of pure delight.  It’s called Blues in the Night, and it’s a glorious musical revue of the history of that genre.  And such a vastly diverse history that is, with vaudeville songs, deeply moving songs of love and loss, lush and lonely excursions into real jazz, and comic novelty songs that get seriously, hilariously bawdy.
