Apres girl portrays the life of Park Nam-ok, Korea’s first female filmmaker. After its acclaimed premiere in 2020, the piece will be presented again at Haeoreum Grand Theater. In the 1950s when women’s social activities were not encouraged, Park Nam-ok did not give up on her dream of becoming a filmmaker and, despite many hardships and despairs, made The Widow, a major work in Korean film history.

Live instruments and singing in fusion Korean music tell the story of a blind girl Oki’s life. Oki is making a Braille book out of the story of a Korean mythical princess Baridegi for her mom who cannot leave her sickbed, wishing her mom would recover before the book is complete. This barrier-free piece of Korean musical theater had its rerun for 5 consecutive years, acclaimed for its refined portrayal of the role and significance of the disabled in arts. The performance of disabled actors will be accompanied by a commentary and sign language interpretation for a more accessible viewing experience.

Actors holding various instruments made their way up to the seats, greeting the audience, waving hands. Soon, some of the violinists began to strike a note, with others dancing along. On stage, some were showing magic tricks to the audience members, receiving rounds of applause. Once, the lights dimmed and the siren began to blare, the audience was transported into Russia, as the “Prologue” began to play. This was the beginning of NATASHA, PIERRE & THE GREAT COMET OF 1812 (a.k.a THE GREAT COMET) ’s Korean production. The vibrant musical opened its doors to Russia on March 20 at the Universal Arts Center, inviting the Korean audience to an unforgettable theatre experience.
