Seven is the perfect number. Thursday night marked my seventh time seeing the hit musical "Wicked." Here's the countdown: Twice in San Francisco in high school, once in New York as a high school graduation present, three times in Chicago to see a family friend in the cast, and, now, once in Sacramento where the mind blowing show - as so many have called it - plays through June 17 at the Community Center Theater.

A Wicked Gala, a 'Wickedly Magical Evening in Oz,' takes place tonight, Saturday, May 19, beginning at 6:00 p.m. The Sacramento Convention Center Ballroom, 1400 J Street in Sacramento, will be transformed for the evening into the "Oz Dust Ballroom," themed after the hit Broadway show Wicked, which begins performances at Community Center Theater on May 23.

Wicked has clearly established itself as a runaway success, so I don't think what people need now is my personal "review" of the show. Ever since being nominated for the Tony Award for best musical, people have known that the show is good. But I do want to put in my two cents about seeing the touring company at the Durham Performing Arts Center.

Broadway League Awards Education Grants to WIT & WICKED

The Broadway League has awarded coveted New York Education Grants to the Broadway productions of Wit by Margaret Edson, and Wicked by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman. Each production receives a $5,000 grant towards its 2012 educational initiatives. The grants are important to the growth and development of theatre education in the city as they encourage theatres to create more opportunities for young people and to exchange ideas about education.
