Talk about baptism by fire! That's what Gustavo Dudamel--that wunderkind of the classical conducting world--faced as he reached the podium of the Met for the first time Friday night. Not only was he conducting Verdi's great opera, OTELLO, but he was doing so with a last-minute substitute in the title role. The result: All went well with the Met's production of the masterwork.

Soprano Diana Damrau plays the tragic heroine, Violetta, and tenor Juan Diego Florez returns to the Met for the first time since 2015 to sing the role of Alfredo, Violetta's hapless lover. Baritone Quinn Kelsey is Alfredo's father, Germont, who destroys their love. Later performances feature Anita Hartig, Stephen Costello, Artur Ruci?ski, and Placido Domingo.

Anyone who was expecting the equivalent of Bette Midler's arrival as Dolly in the Harmonia Gardens when Jonas Kaufmann finally returned to the Met, on October 17, after four years and some high-profile cancellations, must have been wildly disappointed. Oh sure, Kaufmann looked like a glamorous buckaroo and compared to some of the star tenor misfires already this season at the Met, he had a triumph.

The synopsis of Verdi's AIDA, with Ghislanzoni's smart libretto, places it in 'Egypt, during the reign of the pharaohs.' For the first performance of the opera this season, on Wednesday, they should have changed that to 'during the reign of soprano Anna Netrebko,' because she owned the stage from the moment she entered.

The Color Purple is op zaterdag 25 en zondag 26 augustus aanwezig op de Amsterdamse Uitmarkt. Op zondagavond zingt de cast het nummer 'De Kleur Paars' tijdens de Musical Sing-a-Long. Dit is ook meteen het moment om kennis te maken met de nieuwe castsamenstelling. Tijdens de Uitmarkt kan het publiek de stand van de musical vinden op het Marineterrein standnummer 92. Bij de stand vindt op zondag een meet & greet plaats met castleden van The Color Purple een zijn er verschillende kortingen en weggeefacties georganiseerd.
