The 50th anniversary celebration 'LIVE FROM THE NATIONAL THEATRE: 50 YEARS ON STAGE,' directed by Nicholas Hytner, will be broadcast by National Theatre Live to cinemas internationally today, November 2, 2013 (with many encore dates in U.S. cities). From Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead to The History Boys, from Antony and Cleopatra to Angels in America, from Guys and Dolls to London Road, this will be a thrilling evening of live performance and rare glimpses from the archive, featuring many of the most celebrated actors who have performed on their stages over the past five decades.

It should be no surprise that as a lover of theater, I firmly believe in the transitive power of the performing arts. Any production has the power to elicit some emotional response from the audience, but theater often does more. Studies have shown that participating in the performing arts helps students improve their performance in other academic areas. While the impact of the arts in schools is widely known, the use and impact of theater and the arts in prison systems is somewhat less talked about. Nevertheless, theater has been used by penile systems for centuries as a way to rehabilitate prisoners, and that unorthodox idea is at the core of Our Country's Good, now playing at UT-Austin. The infrequently produced Tony nominated play, written by Timberlake Wertenbaker, is a completely engrossing love letter to the virtues of theater and a thrilling depiction of a peculiar moment in Australian history.

Today, October 22, 2013, marks the official 50th anniversary of the National Theatre of Great Britain. The National Theatre first opened its doors in 1963 at the Old Vic, under Laurence Olivier. 800 productions later, they are marking their half-century with a short season celebrating the remarkable people and plays that have made the NT one of the most cherished and creative of great British institutions.

Our Country's Good by Timberlake Wertenbaker will play in the Clarence Brown Theatre's Carousel Theatre October 3-20, 2014. Based on real events, this award-winning drama is an evocative look at a moment in history - the founding of a nation -and an inspiring tale about the transforming power of theatre. The producers of ONCE, winner of eight Tony Awards including Best Musical and winner of the 2013 Grammy Award winner for Best Musical Theater Album, have just announced casting for the first North American touring company. Starz in association with Sony Pictures Television has announced today that Tobias Menzies ('Game of Thrones,' 'Rome,' Casino Royale) will play the roles of both Frank Randall and Jonathan 'Black Jack' Randall in the original series 'Outlander.' According to the Daily Mail, Josie Rourke's Donmar Warehouse production of Conor McPherson's THE WEIR will be transferring to Wyndham's Theatre in the West End, beginning January 16, 2014, for a January 22nd opening. Shakespeare's classic exploration of ambition, guilt and destiny opens at the Globe on 22 June 2013, the third and final play in the Season of Plenty's trio of supernatural Shakespeares. The production features Joseph Millson and Samantha Spiro as the murderous couple at the heart of the play, with Billy Boyd as Banquo and Gawn Grainger as Duncan. Celebrated cabaret artist Bette Bourne will play the Porter.
