Over the course of the last 26 years somewhere along the line of learned history in the depths of musical theatre you have heard the name Jonathan Larson, synonymous with the 1996 Rock musical RENT that changed the face of musical theatre in its time. Boasting a rock score and groundbreaking storylines such as the rise of the AIDS epidemic sweeping the country, RENT was unlike anything in its conception. However, Jonathan Larson and his stamp on modern musical theatre came into fruition before RENT. Trying to establish himself in the live theatre arena since the early 1980s, Larson began performing his Semi-Autobiographical Rock Musical Tick, Tick...Boom! in the early 90’s as a solo piece. Tragically Jonathan Larson passed away in 1996 of a rare heart condition before he was able to feel the immense magnitude of his fame.

For decades, the Afghanistan we know from the news has been a country of war, unspeakable violence, and the goings-on of an intractable band of fundamentalists set on taking its culture back centuries. In James McMurtry’s new effort, The Horses and the Hounds, the acclaimed songwriter backs personal narratives with effortless elegance (“Canola Fields”) and endless energy (“If It Don’t Bleed”). Familiar foundations guide the journey. “There’s a definite Los Angeles vibe to this record,” McMurtry says. “The ghost of Warren Zevon seems to be stomping around among the guitar tracks. Don’t know how he got in there. He never signed on for work for hire.”

Broadway veteran Telly Leung has co-produced a documentary with Aaron Albano, another Broadway veteran and active member of the AAPI Broadway community. It is called ENSEMBLE and it is currently available via Broadway on Demand.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a musical inspired by the Victor Hugo novel of 1831, with music primarily featured in the 1996 Disney film adaptation. With music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, and book by James Lapine and Peter Parnell The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a 2.5 hour deep dive that takes pieces from both the film and Hugo’s novel to create an amalgamation of the world in which the people in this story reside.

The Musical Theatre Guild will be presenting for one-night only A Sondheim Birthday Celebration Live! Laugh! Love! on Stephen Sondheim’s birthday March 22nd at The El Portal Theatre. Jason Graae hosts the Celebration featuring Musical Theatre Guild members with special guest, Stephen Sondheim veteran Teri Ralston. I got to playfully rouse Teri to reminisce about her decades’ history with Stephen Sondheim.
