Way back in those days of yesteryear, the early 1990's, Jeffrey Katzenberg was celebrating his success. He had almost single-handedly guided the Walt Disney animation studio back to glory after decades of reduced returns, and he had the bright idea to try to do the same to the live-action movie musical.

Based on the true story of the newboys strike of 1899 and the Disney film of the same name, NEWSIES tells the story of the bloodline of New York, the newsies. Jack Kelly is the boldly charismatic leader of the group, but he is left dreaming about traveling out of the big city. Joseph Pulitzer owns The World, in an attempt to increase circulation, he raises the price of newspapers at the expense of the newsies. Jack, with the help of newcomer Davey and his little brother Les, rallies the boys to form their own union and strike against the most powerful man in the city, Pulitzer himself. With the help of the beautiful young journalist Kathrine Plumber and the boystorious personality of New York, Miss Meda Larkin, the newsboys shut down the city. In Oscar Wilde's THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, Gwendolen says, "In matters of grave importance, style, not sincerity, is the vital thing." It seems that NY Classical's new production took this quip to heart as their stylizing replaces more nuanced characterization at times, at least in the gender-reversed version.

This past Saturday an impromptu performance at the Huntington Mall began with a shout known to all musical lovers:
'Pulitzer and Hearst, they think we're nothing' Are we nothing'?'
To which an excited mob of newsies replied tenaciously, 'No!'
Audiences were then treated to an impressive flash mob rendition of 'The World Will Know' during a lull in the Macy's Prom Fashion Event. After this commanding performance, there's no doubt in anybody's mind just how great First Stage Theatre Company's production of Newsies will be.

The Argenta Community Theater cast of Newsies may not be the King's of New York, but they are most definitely the King's of North Little Rock. Argenta never fails putting on a fantastic show. Led by Director Vincent Insalaco, and produced by Judy Tenenbaum, the casting was superb, the set was envious, and the choreography was top notch--and looked like so much fun!
