From A Bottle Of Beer To A Spanish American War Off-Broadway Play
by A.A. Cristi - Nov 6, 2018

The beginning draft of the play The Court Martial of Almirante Montojo wrote itself deep within Filipino playwright Dennis Posadas's psyche one day as he was having a beer near Manila Bay several years ago. Since then his play, a historical courtroom drama about Spanish Contraalmirante Patricio Montojo's post Battle of Manila Bay trial in Madrid in 1899 after his loss to Admiral George Dewey at Manila Bay has been edited and rewritten so many times. 'I first pitched the story to a newly opened science museum in Manila several years ago but we did not come to an agreement. So the story slept for a while in my hard drive, Posadas said.

BWW Review: NEWSIES at Theatre Harrisburg
by Andrea Stephenson - Nov 3, 2018

While the 1992 movie Newsies received mixed reviews and did not perform well in movie theaters, it developed quite a following as a home movie. The inspirational movie, based loosely on the historical newsboys' strike of 1899, starred Christian Bale as Jack Kelly and David Moscow as David Jacobs. In 2011 Disney Theatrical Productions adapted Newsies for the stage, and it opened on Broadway in 2012, earning eight Tony Award nominations. Disney's Newsies: The Broadway Musical, with music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Jack Feldman, and book by Harvey Fierstein, has found its way onto stages in many schools and community theatres, building up a new generation of Newsies fans. With its rousing musical numbers and high-energy dancing, Newsies is sure to bring audiences to their feet. Under the direction of Adam Gustafson and Kyle Weary, Theatre Harrisburg's Newsies opened at the Whitaker Center on November 2nd, when I had the opportunity to view this delightful show.

BWW Review: NEWSIES at Fargo North High
by Brian Michaels - Oct 31, 2018

If you need any more evidence that Newsies is popular just look around Fargo-Moorhead as 3 different productions of the show are being put on this year. What I love about our local theatre community is that you can watch multiple productions of the same show and each school puts their own special touches into the shows. Fargo North High and directors Tom & Rachel Gillen are the next to tackle this show and they did not disappoint. Led by a 22 member pit orchestra directed by Greg Schultz to get the music flowing. I assume most are familiar with the story, but just in case Newsies is based on the real life newsboy strike in New York in 1899.

High School Drama: Hume-Fogg Academic High School's AVA LOCKNAR
by Jeffrey Ellis - Oct 29, 2018

Very few actors can boast the resume, replete with some of the most iconic roles in musical theater, of Hume-Fogg Academic High School's Ava Locknar. Now a senior in Daron Bruce's and Lisa Forbis' renowned musical theatre program at the school, Ava's been at home on Broadway - albeit Nashville's Broadway - for four years, although it doesn't take much of a stretch of the imagination to envision her on the Great White Way, taking on more musical theater challenges.

BWW Review: Spectacular Cast Gives Chaffin's Barn's NEWSIES A Fresh Appeal
by Jeffrey Ellis - Sep 22, 2018

For plenty of fast-paced action, along with some stellar performances by a fresh-faced cast of eager young theatrical triple threats and a coterie of Nashville stage favorites, one need look no further than Disney's Newsies, the latest onstage offering from Chaffin's Barn Dinner Theatre, the iconic Music City venue that's been entertaining audiences for more than half a century. In its way, The Barn (as it is affectionately known in these parts) and its laudable history ensure that its treatment of the popular musical theater title lend the show's historical basis more than a little gravitas in the making of a stage spectacle.

From the Artistic Director/CEO Todd Haimes: Bernhardt/Hamlet
by Roundabout Theatre Company - Aug 23, 2018

How much must one person risk to break down a barrier? Perhaps everything. In 1897, a small revolution has begun in a theatre in France. The most famous stage actress in the world has announced that she will be playing the most famous character in the world, and the theatergoing elite are ill at ease. The actress is Sarah Bernhardt, whose ingenious and wildly popular portrayals of some of the canon's greatest heroines and ingenues in the preceding decades has made her into the world's first-ever international superstar. The character is Hamlet, who, with his enigmatic machinations and relentless soliloquies, has been the undoing of so many actors throughout history. Bernhardt, for all her immense and seemingly unstoppable talent, might just be no exception.
