BWW Review: Los Angeles Youth Ballet's NUTCRACKER Scores With A Delightful, Whimsical And Polished Presentation At The Alex Theatre
by Valerie-Jean Miller - Jan 8, 2019

The weekend before Christmas, The Los Angeles Youth Ballet presented a gorgeous, colorful and professional performance of The Nutcracker at the Alex Theatre in Glendale, CA. The production was very carefully constructed, with an emphasis on good technique, passion and commitment in performance and lovingly re-created by Artistic Director and Choreographer, Andrea Paris-Gutierrez. It was staged and choreographed optimally for each age group performing. Enchanting might be an adjective to describe the feeling the performers were emitting to the viewers, who's rapt attention was a sign of both enjoyment and endorsement. The Nutcracker Suite was composed by Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky, and has long been the favorite balletic composition to be performed during the Christmas Season. (more...)

BWW Review: Moscow Ballet's THE GREAT RUSSIAN NUTCRACKER Wows And Satiates At The Soraya
by Valerie-Jean Miller - Jan 4, 2019

On December 19th, 2018 a most extraordinary performance was witnessed at the Soraya Theatre of the Arts - the most traditional and established version, choreographically, even though it has been modified conceptwise, of the iconic ballet, The Nutcracker Suite, composed by Tchaikovsky, which is a true holiday tradition all over the world, was performed by the legendary Moscow Ballet. Ballet Master Vladamir Troschenko, directed this prodiction. The choreography was the choreography that I am familiar with as being the traditional steps and combinations that were the original staging by Marius Patipa and Lev Ivanov of the Imperial Russian Ballet. Selections from The Nutcracker were first performed as an orchestral suite in March 1892. The ballet proper debuted in December of that year. It was presented at St. Petersburg's Mariinsky Theatre. BWW Review: SCHOOL OF ROCK THE MUSICAL at National Theatre
by Kelle Long - Jan 19, 2019

Every kid with a performer's heart deserves to experience three things in their childhood: access to an incredible arts program, a passionate mentor, and a really great Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. For me, that was the Springfield (Missouri) Little Theatre, Beth D., and The Phantom of the Opera. I wish for all of today's youth to find the arts and an inspiring mentor. As for Webber for this generation, there is School of Rock The Musical, which actually touches on all of the above. The tour is visiting the National Theatre in Washington, DC this month and packs the biggest dreams and highest professionalism into the tiniest bodies. (more...)

'It's got a sharp, '80s new wave-ish backdrop, but main member Jake Webb brings it into the now with a catchy vocal performance that fans of MGMT and Phoenix might dig,' said Brooklyn Vegan. Webb says of the track, 'behind every eye-twitch, a depleted mainframe barely pulses. BWW Review: THE MAGIC FIRE Is Wise, Witty and Wonderful
by Frank Benge - Jan 16, 2019

THE MAGIC FIRE, by Lillian Groag, is a 1997 memory play set in Buenos Aires during the 1950s regime of Juan Peron. This cross cultural immigrant family finds their personal refuge from the fascist politics of Argentina in art, theatre and opera. Events eventually bring them to the point where they are forced to confront not only politics, but also, their own moral obligations. The play first premiered at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and still contains a powerful message that mirrors some of this country's current disturbing political trends. (more...)

Renee Wahl Premieres New Single At The Boot, Plus Announces Forthcoming LP
by BWW News Desk - Jan 11, 2019

Renee Wahl is set to release her new LP Cut To The Bone on Friday, March 15th. The 9-track set, produced by Stuart Mathis (The Wallflowers, Lucinda Williams) and recorded in Nashville, is a self-exploration of discovery, awareness, and finding the beauty in spite of something painful. She writes from her heart, occasionally changing names “to protect the innocent.” These songs are her darkest, rawest yet, as Wahl opens herself up more than ever before. Yesterday, The Boot premiered the album's moody lead single 'To The Bone.' 'Inspired by vintage hucksters and con artists of old, Wahl explores the age-old issue of knowing who to trust — especially with your heart,' says The Boot of the song. “Wahl makes it clear that she's not falling for anyone's Tricks.” 'It's about relying on people to fix your life when they really don't have your best interest at heart,' Wahl adds, 'those people willing to take advantage of another for their own gain.'  (more...)

BWW Review: CIRCUS ABYSSINIA Ethiopian Dreams Come True in NYC
by Cindy Sibilsky - Dec 26, 2018

When one thinks of Ethiopian imports, coffee and extraordinary runners might grace the top of the list but circus artists aren't usually associated with the sovereign African nation. However, with Circus Abyssinia - an all-Ethiopian contemporary circus company, the brainchild and heart project of a pair of brothers, Mehari 'Bibi' Tesfamariam and Binyam 'Bichu' Tesfamariam, who are both talented jugglers and global arts entrepreneurs - the world might start to see Ethiopia in a different light. The siblings' journey to fulfill their dreams reads more like a fairytale or Cinderella story, where the heroes persevere and make magic happen with their unshakable willpower and determination, though not despite many struggles and frustrations on their way to fulfilling their dreams. (more...)

BWW Review: WE ARE PROUD TO PRESENT... Discovers the Root of the Herero Tragedy in Austin, TX
by Amy Tarver - Dec 23, 2018

Decorating the stage nonchalantly, stretching and chatting with little regard to the fourth wall, six actors join together to explore the storytelling possibilities into the lives of the Herero people of Namibia. Creatively presented by Director Liz Fisher, the action onstage toggles between artistic commentary on the feelings of how the actors desire to present this story, and the social responsibility of portraying the truth about colonialism. The six characters often onstage debated how the story should be told, experimenting with comedy and how the color of one's skin impacts the perception of and more often the ignorance of historic events. Written by Jackie Sibblies Drury, WE ARE PROUD TO PRESENT A PRESENTATION ABOUT THE HERERO OF NAMIBIA, FORMERLY KNOWN AS SOUTHWEST AFRIKA, FROM THE GERMAN SUDWESTAFRIKA, BETWEEN THE YEARS 1884 - 1915, opens a pandora's box about the genocide of the Herero Tribe in Namibia committed by Germany long before the holocaust of World War II. BWW Review: THIRST (AND OTHER BITS OF FLANN) at The Abbey Theatre
by Jini Rooney - Dec 21, 2018

Imagine your absolute favorite story. Swap the protagonist for a bicycle-averse sergeant, an amiable but soused philosopher, a fellow tippler a few shillings short of a pound and a publican with a brain that should be pickled for posterity. Scour the stage for 4 exceptional Irish actors to narrate the tale and then assemble them in the one location in Ireland where the finest stories are exchanged - a public house. Furnish them with one of Ireland's savviest wordsmiths and the result is unquestionably a treat. (more...)
