The Academy Invites 842 To Membership; 50% Are Women

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is extending invitations to join the organization to 842 artists and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures. The 2019 class is 50% women, 29% people of color, and represents 59 countries. Those who accept the invitations will be the only additions to the Academy's membership in 2019.

Bridge Street Theatre Presents THE SHAGGS: PHILOSOPHY OF THE WORLD

Coming this summer to Catskill's adventurous Bridge Street Theatre - its first attempt at producing a full-scale summer musical! But, true to form, it's a pretty off-beat one: Joy Gregory and Gunnar Madsen's acclaimed Off-Broadway hit "The Shaggs: Philosophy of the World". It is based on the true story of three sisters from rural New Hampshire whose father forced them to form a rock band, and who recorded an album back in 1969 which has since become a cult classic. "The Shaggs" will play for eight performances only, Thursdays through Sundays July 11-21, in BST's intimate 84-seat Mainstage.

Hoboken is about to open at the Hollywood Fringe Festival. Director Fritz Brekelller took time from a busy schedule to talk with us about the show. Fritz Brekeller has worked extensively in the soap opera world, winning multiple Daytime Emmy Awards, most recently this past May, as part of the directing team at CBS's The Young and the Restless. THEATER: He received a 2016 NY Innovative Theater award for Outstanding Direction of Scott C. Sickles' Composure at the Workshop Theater. Among his many other theater credits, includes two past collaborations with playwright Laura Rohrman: My Life as You and The Elevator: Secret Thoughts. He also conceived the musical revue Foxy Ladies Love/Boogie 70's Explosion, which played to sold-out crowds at the legendary Duplex in Greenwich Village. TV: ABC's All My Children. FILM: What Would Bear Do? and the short, Through the Morning. WEB: season 4 of the indie soap, Empire and the pilot for the off-off Broadway spoof, Off-Off Kilter.

California Shakespeare Theater Continues Its 45th Season With THE GOOD PERSON OF SZECHWAN

California Shakespeare Theater continues its 2019 summer season with The Good Person of Szechwan by Bertolt Brecht, translated by Wendy Arons and adapted by Tony Kushner, playing July 3 through July 21, 2019 at the Bruns Amphitheater. A Pay What You Can performance will be held on Wednesday, July 3. Tickets will be available starting at 10am on the day of the show through TodayTix and the Cal Shakes Box Office at 510.548.9666.

Patricia Milton's THE VICTORIAN LADIES' DETECTIVE COLLECTIVE Announced At At Central Works

Central Works "cheeky" thriller The Victorian Ladies' Detective Collective by award-winning  playwright Patricia Milton has been extended through June 9 (originally scheduled to close June 2). Directed by Gary Graves, this show is the fifth writer/director comic collaboration between Central Works' resident playwright and its company co-director. Last season, Central Works' production of Bamboozled by Patricia Milton won 4 TBA awards, including both awards in the Outstanding Performer slots for Stacy Ross & Chelsea Bearce (also playing in this production), along with Entire Ensemble and Outstanding Production.

Memorial Service To Be Held For Alan Wasser, Beloved Broadway General Manager

Central Works season of new plays continues this spring with a "cheeky" thriller written by the local award-winning playwright Patricia Milton, The Victorian Ladies' Detective Collective, opening May 4 running through June 2 (previews 5/2 & 3); world-premiere # 63, from the Central Works Writers Workshop. The production, directed by Gary Graves, is the fifth writer/director comic collaboration between Central Works' resident playwright and its company co-director. In Victorian London it seems Jack the Ripper may be at it again where sisters Loveday and Valeria run a boarding house for Single Ladies. When a series of gruesome murders terrorizes the neighborhood, they appeal to the police for protection. But Scotland Yard is no help at all. The bodies are piling up on their doorstep! So the women join with an American ex-pat to bring the killer to justice on their own. Last season's CW production of Bamboozled by Patricia Milton won both TBA awards in the Outstanding Performer slots for Stacy Ross & Chelsea Bearce (now in this production), along with Entire Ensemble and Outstanding Production.

National Youth Theatre Announces Summer/Autumn 2019 Season

The National Youth Theatre today announces its 2019 Summer and Autumn Season which will feature an extended 7th annual REP season of three plays in London, brand new commissions staged in five cities across the UK and festival appearances at the Edinburgh Fringe, Latitude and Bradford Literature Festival. This is the first time the majority of NYT's summer / autumn season productions will be staged outside of London. Three NYT members have also been appointed as paid Centre Stage Creatives and have also been commissioned to build local NYT networks and create new work in towns around the UK.

Ardent Theatre Company today announces the full cast for the first revival of Philip Osment's This Island's Mine. Philip Wilson directs Connor Bannister (Luke), Jane Bertish (Miss Rosenblum/Vladimir), Theo Fraser Steele (Martin/Stephen/Prospero), Corey Montague-Sholay (Selwyn/Dave), Tom Ross-Williams (Mark/The Director/Frank), Rachel Summers (Jody/Mme Irina/Debbie/Wayne), and Rebecca Todd (Marianne/Maggie/Miranda). This Island's Mine opens at the King's Head Theatre on 17 May, with previews from 15 May, until 8 June.
