The role of Elle, the lone character in Francis Poulenc's La voix humaine, has been called a true tour de force for Patricia Racette, who has brought her characterization of the one-act opera to life in productions in Philadelphia, Chicago, St. Louis, and other cities over the past five years.

Kimmel Cultural Campus has announced the much-anticipated return of in-person performing arts across their venues: the Kimmel Center, the Academy of Music, and the Merriam Theater. On September 18, from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m., Kimmel Cultural Campus will host a grand reopening event in Commonwealth Plaza to celebrate the start of the 2021-22 season.

Broadway’s Kimberly Dawn Neumann and Bonnie Comley will be on the judges’ panel for the 2021 National Distinguished Young Women Scholarship Program taking place virtually this year. Distinguished Young Women, formerly America’s Junior Miss, was founded in 1958 as a way to reward the accomplishments of high school senior girls seeking to pursue higher education. Both Neumann and Comley were scholarship recipients of the program.

It’s a summer “homecoming” for Goodman Theatre audiences! On July 30, Chicago’s theater since 1925 will resume live, in-person performances following a 16-month COVID-19 pandemic period of darkened stages.

This particular version, which appeared on Relaxin’ with the Miles Davis Quintet, was recorded in October 1956 at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio in Hackensack, NJ, and features Davis on trumpet, Coltrane on tenor sax, Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums.

The Old Globe today announced plans for the long-awaited full reopening of its three theatres in Balboa Park. Audiences will be able to once again gather in the Globe’s outdoor theatre starting June 4 and in the two indoor theatres in September.

In 2020 the LMS provided a lifeline to small, independent music venues forced to close their doors due to the COVID pandemic with over $800,000 in grants. LMS continues this support in 2021 as independent venues struggle to reopen in a challenging post-pandemic landscape.

2020 LMS grantees included a wide spectrum of independent venues from all over the country, from the coasts to the heartland. Based in 14 states across the country, the initial grant recipients boast strong connections to their communities and run the gamut of genre orientations.

City Theater will be open to in person audiences July 23rd through August 1st.

Singer Jill Corey, an overnight sensation in 1953, when she landed on the cover of Life Magazine, passed away from natural causes on April 3 at UPMC Sunnyside in Sunnyside, PA.  She was 85. 

Shakespeare's Globe is preparing to reopen its outdoor theatre on 19 May 2021. Provided the conditions are met for Step 3 of the Government's roadmap for cultural reopening, the Globe will be welcoming audiences in for socially distanced performances, having closed on 18 March 2020.

Celebrating 55 years of revolutionary modern dance, America's premiere modern dance repertory company presents a virtual evening of historical modern dance masterpieces. Repertory Dance Theatre presents HOMAGE, featuring choreography by Doris Humphrey, José Limón, Donald McKayle, and Elizabeth Waters. The virtual concert will open with a live-streamed event on April 23. 

The criteria are that these shows have been nominated for Best Musical from the 3rd Tony Awards (the ceremony that started the Best Musical category) in 1949 to the nominations of what will now be the 74th Tony Awards in 2021. I will be determining their signs based upon their Broadway premiere date. With those rules in mind, here we go!
