This coming Saturday, October 23 is officially Tin Pan Alley Day in NYC. As a physical destination, Tin Pan Alley is five buildings at 47-55 W. 28th St. near the Flatiron building in the neighborhood called “NoMad,” north of Madison Square Park. But Tin Pan Alley is much more than a physical destination. It is a state of mind. It is the spot where the American music industry was born. From the 1890s to around 1910, this block of publishing houses and agent’s offices was where you went if you had written a song that you wanted the world to hear it. Many of our most illustrious Broadway composers got their start plugging songs in the offices of Tin Pan Alley including Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, and Jerome Kern.

The Los Angeles stop of the national tour of HAMILTON has already landed at the Pantages Theater mesmerizing audiences with their mastery of speeding-singing raps and intricate precision choreography. Joanna A. Jones stars as Eliza Schuyler Hamilton, the wife of Alexander Hamilton. Had the chance to talk with Joanna about her HAMILTON history and the various other shows she’s graced the stage on.

There are some people who just have a passion for living. Passion is a word that applies to everything Christine Andreas touches. She has been bewitching Broadway audiences since she first appeared as the wicked maid Nancy in Angel Street. Her turns in much-heralded revivals of My Fair Lady, Oklahoma!, and On Your Toes made her Broadway's ingenue of choice and earned her two Tony nominations. She also wowed Broadway audiences in The Scarlet Pimpernel and the 2010 revival of La Cage aux Folles. She conquered the West End in The Fields of Ambrosia, written by her husband and collaborator, Martin Sylvestri.

David Bennett is now six years into his job as general director of the San Diego Opera Association. When hired, he faced shaky finances, a loss of major donors, and huge turnover in the membership of the board of directors. The new board hired him with the understanding that downsizing and reinvention of the organization were his priorities. Then, after getting off to a surprisingly good start, Bennett had the forced restrictions of COVID-19 to contend with. Perhaps a biblical plague of locusts is next?

La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts Producing Artistic Director BT McNicholl will welcome you home to a very special return season of truly exhilarating events at the newly renovated theatre! Won’t it be amazing to once again laugh together at the unmistakable comedy of the one-and-only JAY LENO and the always hilarious MARGARET CHO?

They got hit with a double whammy. Not only were they sidelined first by the pandemic for a year and a half, but to now present 'The Chandelier' all this time later, and still under many Covid restrictions, the entire piece, which was to be 'site-specific' had to be reworked and reimagined. Heidi Duckler, the Founder/Artistic Director of Heidi Duckler Dance, and Choreographer of the piece gave a short introduction explaining how this World Premiere presentation came to be. 'The Chandelier' was inspired by a novel of the same name written by Brazilian Clarice Lispector and published originally in 1946. The book was translated recently from Portuguese into English by Magdelena Edwards and Benjamin Moser. The piece was first constructed to be performed at the Wallis Annenberg Center, highlighting different areas and spaces inside and outside of the theatre, different architectural patterns and settings, to tell the story of a young woman, Virginia, through her own musings and ideations. That was the original plan, however with all the Covid rules and restrictions still in place, it was realized it needed to be performed outside, and contained in one space, with the audience socially distanced. What was created was an innovative, stylized space that became different sets/places as the narrative unfolded, magically and mystically bringing her inner imagination to life.

BroadwayWorld had the pleasure of catching up with Glenn and Hilty over Zoom. We talked about the new series, the joys of voice acting, and how working on Centaurworld surprised them in the best way. 

Center Theatre Group, in association with UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, presents 32 ACRES, an outdoor soundwalk through Los Angeles State Historic Park, now through September 29, 2021 during park hours (8am through sunset).
