Goodman Theatre Artistic Director Robert Falls has announced casting for his upcoming revival of Molly Sweeney by Brian Friel. In assuming the title role, Chicago favorite Kate Fry returns to the Goodman, following her recent appearance in Falls' production of The Winter's Tale. Joining Fry are stage and screen star Brendan Coyle (Downton Abbey), who returns to the Goodman following his triumphant appearance in last season's St. Nicholas by Conor McPherson, and Chicago's Christopher Donahue (Oedipus Rex at Court Theatre, Moby Dick at Lookingglass).

Anna Kotula shines as poet Emily Dickinson in William Luce's Tony-winning play, 'The Belle of Amherst.' Kotula plays Dickinson as a young girl and celebrated recluse in a performance that brings alive one of the most brilliant poets in American history. Produced by the Rubicon Theatre Company in Ventura.

Rubicon Theatre wraps up its extraordinary 2019 Jack Oakie Summer Youth Program with the annual Kids for Kids fundraiser. This year's concert is titled a?oeBroadway Through the Ages.a?? Notwithstanding the lingering leeriness I feel about going to see them, one-person shows can be memorable and truly special. Billy Crystal's 700 Sundays, Frank Gorshin's Say Goodnight, Gracie and Colin Quinn's Long Story Short stand out as the best that I've seen by men, while I'd point to Julie Harris's Belle of Amherst, Lily Tomlin's The Search for Intelligent Life in the Universe, and Tova Feldshuh's Golda's Balcony as the best by women - plus two more at Spoleto this year, Avital Lvova's Angel and Ayodele Casel's While I Have the Floor.

GOOD MORNING, THEATERATI! This morning (which according to our watch is Friday, April 28) we come to you to pose this musical question: What have they done to poor Heather Morris on Dancing With the Stars? Seriously, what did they do? We don't watch that show but have picked up some rumblings on the mean streets of Music City that intrigue is afoot among the over-teased and body-glittered cast of the ABC Monday night juggernaut - please fill us in, theaterati. Inquiring minds want to know.

Based on the poetry, diaries and letters of poet Emily Elizabeth Dickinson of Amherst, Massachusetts, William Luce's The Belle of Amherst opened to great acclaim on Broadway in 1976 winning a Tony for its star Julie Harris. Petite like Dickinson herself, Harris continued to play the role for 25 years, again reviving it on tour at the Laguna Playhouse in the year 2000. I am happy to say I saw both the 1976 and 2000 productions, which were indeed mesmerizing. Now at Sierra Madre Playhouse, tall and very unique Ferrell Marshall produces and stars as Emily in a brave and exciting performance through April 23. I can only say that in spite of her physical differences, she pulled me in immediately and in the end made me feel every bit as joyful as when I had seen the play before.

Aurora Theatre Company proudly opens its 25th anniversary season with a revival of the play that started it all, DEAR MASTER. Joy Carlin (The How and The Why, Talley's Folly, Jack Goes Boating) helms this elegant portraitfeaturing Bay Area favorite Michael Ray Wisely (The Letters, The Arsonists) and Aurora's first leading lady Kimberly King (Edward Albee's A Delicate Balance), wife of Aurora co-founder Ken Grantham, who played Flaubert in the original production. DEAR MASTER plays September 2 through October 2 at the Aurora Theatre in Berkeley. Turkeys are on-sale at your local supermarket, so there's no better way to know Thanksgiving is just around the corner - yep, less than two weeks away! - which means that local theater companies will be unleashing their holiday season productions with enough productions of A Christmas Story (both the musical and the play), It's A Wonderful Life and Ebenezer Scrooge-led shows that you could shake a stick at!

Caroline Davis' tour-de-force performance as American poet Emily Dickinson distinguishes the current production of William Luce's The Belle of Amherst - onstage through November 22 at The Filming Station Downtown, in a delightful revival helmed by veteran director Melissa Carrelli - and, clearly, is reason enough to make seeing the show an absolute must for theater devotees.
