Trinity Repertory Company has announced that $60,445.55 was raised for the Rhode Island Community Food Bank from the 2019 A Christmas Carol audiences - the second-highest amount ever raised in the thirteen years donations have been requested. Since 2006, this tradition has been a part of the theater's commitment to its community and a reminder to audiences to bring the spirit of Dickens' story into their lives and the rest of Rhode Island. This year's collection brings the total raised over the past thirteen years to more than $667,500.

Next up for L.A. Theatre Works will be Qui Nguyen's VIETGONE, set to be recorded live at the James Bridges Theater on the UCLA campus for four performances beginning January 24, 2020. East West Players' Producing Artistic Director Emeritus Tim Dang will direct this semi-fictional tale of how Qui's parents met in an Arkansas relocation camp. A new pocket-sized hardback selection of Stephen Sondheim lyrics will be published by Alfred A. Knopf. Knopf previously published Sondheim's two-volume complete lyric collection, released in 2010 and 2012.

A celebration of the life and legacy of Broadway legend Harold Prince will take place on Monday, December 16, at The Majestic Theatre (247 West 44th Street). Beginning at 1:30 PM, the tribute is open to friends, family and the theater community, and will feature tributes and performances from colleagues and loved ones. Doors will open at 1PM. The Majestic is the 31-year home of Mr. Prince's record-breaking production of The Phantom of the Opera, the longest-running show in Broadway history.

As BroadwayWorld sadly reported yesterday, stage star Phyllis Newman passed away yesterday, September 15, at the age of 86. Newman got her start in show business at 4 years old imitating Carmen Miranda in theatres and clubs. Her portrayal of Martha Vail in the Jule Styne/Comden and Green musical Subways Are For Sleeping - costumed only in a bath towel - earned her a Tony Award. Her other Broadway credits include Bells Are Ringing, The Apple Tree, On the Town, The Prisoner of Second Avenue, Awake and Sing, Wish You Were Here, First Impressions, and her one-woman musical The Madwoman of Central Park West, which she co-authored with Arthur Laurents. She garnered a Tony Award nomination for her highly-acclaimed performance in Neil Simon's Broadway Bound.

The renaming of the theatre was dedicated to Stephen Sondheim, the greatest and best known artist in American musical theatre on his 80th birthday. 

ENSEMBLE THEATRE COMPANY (ETC) presents the first show of its 2019-20 season, a contemporary look at William Shakespeare's MEASURE FOR MEASURE, directed by ETC Artistic Director Jonathan Fox.

Winner of five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Fun Home opens The Encore Musical Theatre Company's 12th season and will run Sept. 12-Oct. 13, 2019. Described as 'A Family Tragicomic,' Fun Home was written by cartoonist Alison Bechdel, best known for her long-running comic strip 'Dykes to Watch Out For.' Named the Best Book of 2006 by Time magazine, Fun Home was adapted into a musical by Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori (Shrek, Violet, Thoroughly Modern Millie) and opened on Broadway in 2015 after a sold-out Off-Broadway run at the Public Theater in 2013.

Signature Theatre and Stephen Sondheim have been a winning combination in the DC theatre scene since 1991when the company presented Sweeney Todd at Gunston. In 1992 it presented the Stephen Sondheim/John Weidman collaboration known as Assassins. The show was produced again by Signature in 2006 in their garage space.
