Review: BLACK SABBATH - THE BALLET, Sadler's Wells
by Franco Milazzo - Oct 23, 2025

Despite the enticing cultural dissonance of its title, Black Sabbath – The Ballet is, by definition, a terrible idea. It is the conceptual equivalent of putting a tuxedo on a pit bull, or hiring Prince Andrew as your PR manager. This is what happens when the civic-minded folk at a major arts company, having dutifully listened to enough AC/DC to establish their street cred, decide they can bottle the anarchic essence of heavy metal and sell it in three-act bottles to those living off the ever-sweet smell of nostalgia and the kind of people who buy all their concert T-shirts from Vinted.

Review: EVERY BRILLIANT THING, starring Minnie Driver, @sohoplace
by Franco Milazzo - Oct 22, 2025

If you’re anything like me — a man of taste, decency, and a healthy suspicion of anything that smells of group therapy — you approach a one-person play about depression with the same enthusiasm you’d reserve for an unexpected colonoscopy. The title, Every Brilliant Thing, only amplified my well-fed scepticism. It sounds like it should be a self-congratulatory bumper sticker on an electric vehicle or the name of a hastily manufactured boy band.

It is easy to “give yourself over to absolute pleasure” at Roxy’s current musical production of THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW, where you are drawn into a peculiar charm of Richard O’Brien’s iconic musical the very moment you step inside and wait for the excitement to unfold.

Review: MISERY at Stage West
by Brian Michaels - Oct 18, 2025

Stage West’s latest production of Misery, directed by J.J. Gordon, delivers a tense and atmospheric reimagining of Stephen King’s classic psychological thriller. Performed in Stage West’s cozy 50-seat thrust-style theatre, this production transforms intimacy into intensity, placing the audience mere feet away from the unfolding nightmare.

The History of Feminist Plays That Came Before LIBERATION
by Jennifer Ashley Tepper - Oct 28, 2025

As the fight for women to have equal rights and opportunities has evolved, so has the presence of plays telling these stories. When I wrote my book, Women Writing Musicals: The Legacy that the History Books Left Out, the first-ever book about female musical theatre writers, I researched many musicals that are in this genre as well.

Review: MUSICAL PLAY “THE DINNER TABLE DETECTIVE”

Musical Play “THE DINNER TABLE DETECTIVE” : Based on Tokuya Higashigawa’s best-selling novel “The Dinner Table Detective,” which has sold over five million copies and won the Japan Booksellers' Award, this beloved mystery became a national phenomenon when adapted into a TV series in 2011. Known for its witty banter between a sharp-tongued butler and an heiress detective, as well as its intricate whodunits, the series now returns to the stage as an original musical play.

Review: Ease on Down the Road to see THE WIZ at Dr. Phillips Center For The Performing Arts
by Albert Gutierrez - Oct 2, 2025

The benefit of a stage production means it will always be malleable to change, always willing to look at how a story written in the past can still be relevant in the present, and remain timeless for the future. What follows in this new production of The Wiz is a recontextualization of our favorite characters. While the structure of the story is faithful to the Baum novel and MGM film, it comes with small, but noticeable details that reframe this familiar story not just as a fantastical quest, but as a bildungsroman and revenge tale at the same time.

Review: WE LOVERS at Loud Fridge Theatre Group
by ErinMarie Reiter - Sep 29, 2025

“We Lovers” is an imaginative evening that lingers like moonlight long after you leave the clearing. Directed by Kate Rose Reynolds at the Light Box Theatre in Liberty Station.

Versatility and Vision: The Rising Career of Nathaniel Dolquist
by Team BWW - Sep 29, 2025

When actor, singer, and creator Nathaniel Dolquist stepped into the studio to film The Ice King’s Heart, he knew he had only one shot. With that kind of pressure in play, Dolquist still delivered. He performed an extremely difficult feat; a 40+ minute monologue in a single take. This bold and intimate performance captured the true scope of his talent while also sparking new opportunities. Dolquist used his one shot to showcase his performance acumen both on screen and on stage.

Review: COLD COUNTRY at ExPats Theatre (@ Atlas)
by Mary Lincer - Sep 29, 2025

ExPats Theatre has assembled an excellent troupe of actors for Cold Country by contemporary Swiss playwright, Reto Finger. Director (and translator) Karin Rosnizeck ably guides them through an engrossing but difficult script which tries to integrate ancient rural Swiss myths with modern situations. The writer's efforts may be labored, but the acting is wonderful, as are the scenic projections. Cold Country does take an audience away from today; strong distractions help.
