Cetology (pronounced a?oesee-TOL-oh-jeea??) is the study of whales. Cetology is also a new play written and performed by Nelia Miller and directed by Michele Stine, with live looping music composed by Alexandra Plattos Sulack and stunning animated, silhouette-style projections by Jenna Jo Pawlicki. This solo show warps the destructive story of Moby Dick and the selfless story of Jonah's whale in an attempt to understand being left behind by the ones we love. As Ahab's wife and Jonah's mother, Miller harnesses the power of women's anger and the delicacy of exercising that rage in this powerful story of love, loss, and...whales. Cetology brings an intimate perspective to the conversation around how women are expected to comport themselves and dampen their emotions to suit traditional constructs of romantic partnership and motherhood.

Broadway Theatre Project has announced that internationally-renowned casting director Duncan Stewart will be a visiting artist at BTP's summer 2020 intensive: BTP AT LAND AND SEA! At the project, Stewart will be working with pre-professional students to hone their audition skills. The much-anticipated MOBY DICK (A Musical Reckoning), from the team that brought you NATASHA, PIERRE & THE GREAT COMET OF 1812 in 2015, has finally surfaced at the Loeb Drama Center of the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge. Based on the iconic American novel by Herman Melville, the three-and-a-half-hour-long musical endeavors to theatricalize about 40 of the book's 135 chapters, taking a much larger bite from the source material than the mere 70- page section of Leo Tolstoy's WAR AND PEACE adapted for THE GREAT COMET. Oh, would that Dave Malloy (music, book, lyrics, and orchestrations) and Rachel Chavkin (director, co-developer) had approached this project with such surgical skill, rather than casting the broadest of nets upon the waters.

OPERA America has awarded $220,000 in Repertoire Development Grants to The American Opera Project (New York, NY) in consortium with Seagle Music Colony (Schroon Lake, NY), Beth Morrison Projects (New York, NY), Houston Grand Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Diego Opera and The Dallas Opera. The grants provide technical and financial support to OPERA America Professional Company Members and their producing partners to enhance the quality, quantity and creativity of new American opera and music theater.
