American Symphony Orchestra will pay tribute to the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth with a concert that investigates how his music inspired others on Friday January 31, 8 pm at Carnegie Hall. From Liszt's fantasia on the 'Turkish March' to Spohr's Beethovenesque scherzo and Reger's variations on a bagatelle theme by Beethoven, the program also celebrates the 100th anniversary of an often-overlooked 20th-century master, Galina Ustvolskaya. Her Piano Concerto is considered her first composition and demands the listener's ear with a pounding rhythmic motif that is repeated by the piano until the closing chord.

Music Director Jaap van Zweden will conduct the World Premiere of 2019 Pulitzer Prize winner Ellen Reid's When the World as You've Known It Doesn't Exist - featuring sopranos Eliza Bagg (Philharmonic subscription debut), Martha Cluver (debut), and Estelí Gomez - commissioned by the Philharmonic as part of Project 19, marking the centennial of the 19th Amendment through commissions by 19 women composers; soprano Renée Fleming in Björk's Virus and All Is Full of Love as well as Dark Harbor XXXV and Dark Harbor XI from Anders Hillborg's The Strand Settings; and Bruckner's Symphony No. 4. The program will take place Thursday, February 20, 2020, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, February 21 at 8:00 p.m.; and Saturday, February 22 at 8:00 p.m.

NYTB/Chamber Works (Diana Byer, Founder and Artistic Director) announces its return to Danspace Project with their REP program (February 13 - 15), this year featuring two world premieres: Robert La Fosse's A Soldier's Tale and Antonia Franceschi's untitled new work. The Ojai Film Festival celebrates twenty years of bringing film to Ojai. This year the festival pays tribute to vintage Hollywood with Lifetime Achievement Awards honoring actors Pat Boone and Eva Marie Saint. Continuing a longstanding tradition, this annual festival spotlights ecology with FOCUS EARTH - a full day dedicated to environmental films and eco-shorts. The film Living In The Future's Past, a beautifully photographed environmental documentary, directed by Susan Kucera and narrated/produced by Jeff Bridges, headlines this event. A reception and Q&A with the director follows the film screening on November 10, at 4 pm.

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts today announced its inaugural presentation of visual art to be featured at the REACH, the Center's 21st-century expansion project. Ten works in a rich diversity of media will be on display at the facility upon opening, including six pieces on loan from Glenstone Museum in Potomac, Maryland; sculptures by Joel Shapiro, Deborah Butterfield, and Roy Lichtenstein; and a wall hanging by Sam Gilliam. All works will be on view for the public beginning September 7, 2019.

Celebrated R&B artist Bettye LaVette will make a momentous return to the Café Carlyle, October 10-12, showcasing her inimitable style and gut wrenching vocals. LaVette is an interpreter of the highest order. Whether the song originated as country, rock, pop, or blues, when she gets through with it, it is pure R&B. BRIC is pleased to announce a free concert by iconic R&B songstress Bettye LaVette on Saturday, October 19 at 3PM, co-presented by Downtown Brooklyn Partnership (DBP) at The Plaza at 300 Ashland, to kick off the 2019 BRIC JazzFest. The announcement completes the programming for the fifth edition of the celebrated Brooklyn jazz festival, which continues the 41st season for the pioneering NYC arts-and-media organization and leading presenter of free cultural programming in Brooklyn. The title Perfect Arrangement refers to the compact of a male gay couple and a lesbian couple to hide in plain view from the disapproval of the world in 1950 by posing as two straight couples living in adjoining halves of a Georgetown duplex. The two halves are secretly connected through the residences' respective front closets, a passage that enables each real couple to reunite at night, unnoticed by the world outside. Such a setup is custom-made for farce.
