BWW Review: Mozart's GARDENER Is On Site Opera's SECRET Weapon
by Richard Sasanow - May 15, 2017

It had a great score but an unmanageable book. So the director had it reshaped, cut and done in a creative environmental production that sent the singers scampering throughout the audience. No, I'm not talking about Hal Prince's famous reinvention of Leonard Bernstein's CANDIDE, but On Site Opera's (OSO) charming new take on Mozart's THE SECRET GARDENER (LA FINTA GIARDINIERA), a coproduction with the Atlanta Opera, which just opened in a New York garden before heading south. BWW Review: Bard SummerScape Tackles Mascagni's Little-Known IRIS
by Richard Sasanow - Jul 28, 2016

It probably would have been worth the trip to Bard SummerScape's production of Pietro Mascagni's IRIS—last heard at the Met in 1931--simply to make the acquaintance of soprano Talise Trevigne. Through much suffering and indignity, Trevigne sang the title role in a luxurious, plush-voiced, physical performance that made the most of the score by the composer who will always be known for CAVALLERIA RUSTIANA, that signpost of verismo opera. She's a find, and I hope to hear her again. (more...)

BWW Review: A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM at Baltimore Shakespeare Factory Creates Magic and Fun in the Forest
by Kristen Price - Jul 18, 2017

There are few things I love more than finding fun and new things to do outside in the dog days of summer. And lately, it seems that others have shared my love for all things sunshine by planning more and more of these events. One of these events is theatre outside, which may not be a new idea, but it seems more companies are participating in these types of shows. For instance, the Baltimore Shakespeare Factory is performing A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM in the garden of the Evergreen Museum in Baltimore County. Don't get me wrong, I love this particular play in all forms, but there's something special about seeing it outdoors In a Garden, seeing as that is the actual setting for the play. And while I've seen a few productions outdoors, I need to say that this particular production was probably the best I've ever seen. (more...)

Tina Chancey, John Mark Rozendaal, Webb Wiggins Perform In the Salon of Mademoiselle Lévi
by BWW News Desk - Apr 18, 2017

Who was the mysterious Mlle. Levi, whose pardessus playing took Paris by storm in 1745? Thought to come from somewhere in the provinces, she burst upon the Concerts Spirituels, a complete unknown; performed there an unprecedented five times in three years among such luminaries as Guignon and Leclair; and then disappeared from view, only to reappear in the Mercure Galant in 1783, advertising for pupils. There is reason to believe she was a Jewess who may have married an officer stationed in the colonies. When she returned to Paris three decades later, quite possibly widowed and penniless, did she try to rekindle the embers of her earlier success by launching her own salon, where she could perform for, and mingle with potential aristocratic students? This concert features music by Mlle. Levi's friends and contemporaries, composers as Leclair, Marais, Forqueray, Rebel and Couperin, performed by Tina Chancey on five and six-stringed pardessus de viole, John Mark Rozendaal on bass and treble viols, and Webb Wiggins on harpsichord.
