 The Music Center announced it will present two star-studded concerts, JONI 75: A Birthday Celebration Live at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion on November 6 and November 7, 2018, featuring an incredible array of singers and musicians who will honor one of the world's most remarkable artists, Joni Mitchell, on her 75th birthday.  On both nights, Glen Hansard, Emmylou Harris, Norah Jones, Chaka Khan, Diana Krall, Kris Kristofferson, Los Lobos, Graham Nash, Seal, and Rufus Wainwright, will perform songs from all stages of Mitchell's life and career, across the entire oeuvre of her 19 studio albums.  Co-musical directors, providing the musical arrangements for the evenings, are drummer Brian Blade, who recorded three studio albums and toured extensively with Mitchell, and, pianist, composer, arranger producer Jon Cowherd.  (more...)

San Diego Symphony Announces Annual January Festival

The San Diego Symphony's annual January Festival returns in its fourth year entitled, Hearing the Future. Throughout the festival, which runs January 9 - 27, 2019, the organization explores and celebrates the power of music and art to give voice to the evolution and revolutions in the world at large. The festival, curated by composer-conductor Matthew Aucoin (b.1990), will shine a spotlight on the music being made today - from composers and performers who are still in high school, to a 90-year-old jazz master. The festival will also explore the way music from the past - from Haydn, Beethoven and Berlioz to the creators of African-American spirituals - engaged with the most urgent issues of their time. Full Cast And Creative Team Announced For INDECENT at Arena Stage

Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater announces the full company for Pulitzer Prize winner Paula Vogel's thought-provoking play Indecent. Inspired by the 1923 Broadway debut of Sholem Asch's Yiddish drama The God of Vengeance, and the controversy that surrounded its themes of censorship, immigration and anti-Semitism, Vogel explores the behind-the-scenes story of the courageous artists who risked their careers and lives to perform this piece of theater under the most challenging circumstances. Infused with music that combines standards from Yiddish theater with folk traditions of the early to mid-20th century, Indecent, a co-production with Baltimore Center Stage and Kansas City Repertory, is directed by Eric Rosen, with choreography by Erika Chong Shuch and music direction and original music by Alexander Sovronsky. The production runs November 23 - December 30, 2018 in the Kreeger Theater. (more...)

After Kat'a Kabanova (2010), Jen?fa (2014) and recently Foxie! The Cunning Little Vixen, there is still more Leoš Jana?ek to come at La Monnaie. In November 2018 the opera house is presenting Z mrtveho domu (From the House of the Dead), the Czech composer's last and perhaps most powerful opera. It is based on Dostoyevsky's semi-autobiographical novel Memoirs from the House of the Dead (1862), an account of the Russian writer's own experiences as a political prisoner in a Siberian gulag. It is a mosaic of loosely-knit episodes about the inhumane conditions in a labour camp, punctuated with the stories and life histories of his fellow prisoners. (more...)

Rose Theatre Kingston today announces the full cast for Nick Dear's double-bill Hogarth's Progress. Anthony Banks directs Bryan Dick as the younger William Hogarth in the first major UK revival of Dear's acclaimed comedy The Art of Success, which follows Hogarth through a bawdy night in 1730 and Keith Allen as the older William Hogarth in the world premiere of The Taste of the Town which rejoins the now hugely successful artist 30 years later towards the end of his career. SPAC Strikes Deal to Broadcast Philadelphia Orchestra Concerts

As part of Saratoga Performing Arts Center's expanding artistic collaboration with The Philadelphia Orchestra, it announced a new partnership with public radio stations WMHT in upstate New York and WRTI in Philadelphia to record and broadcast four Philadelphia Orchestra concerts in Saratoga this summer. This new series is part of a reciprocal agreement between WRTI and WMHT and marks the first time in the Orchestra's storied 52-year residency that SPAC concerts have held a dedicated broadcast slot on WMHT and the first time that Saratoga performances have aired on WRTI in Philadelphia. The live performances slated for August 8, 10, 15 and 17 will be conducted by Yannick Nezet-Seguin, music director of The Philadelphia Orchestra, and will feature soloists Janai Brugger, the Jussen 'Piano Brothers,' Jennifer Koh, Serhiy Salov and Joshua Bell. Sony Classical Releases GEORGE SZELL: THE CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA THE COMPLETE COLUMBIA ALBUM COLLECTION

The first ever collection of George Szell's Complete Recordings for Columbia Masterworks on 106 CDs is now available thanks to Sony Classical. The collection features symphonies, overtures and other orchestral works, concertos and chamber music, recorded from 1946 to 1969, 92 recordings remastered from the original analogue tapes using 24 bit / 192 kHz technology. 2018 New Stages Fest Lineup Announced

This fall, Goodman Theatre presents its New Stages Festival-a free annual celebration and discovery of new plays by some of the country's finest established and emerging playwrights. Audiences experience a first look at seven new works-including three fully staged developmental productions (performed in repertory) There's Always the Hudson by Paola Lazaro-Muñoz; Felons and Familias by Sandra Delgado; Graveyard Shift by Korde Arrington Tuttle. In addition, four staged readings appear during the last weekend of the festival (October 4-7) including The Wizards by Ricardo Gamboa; Between Covers by Sarah Schulman; Birthday Candles by Noah Haidle; and Cressida on Top by Paula Vogel.
