Review: TROUBLE IN MIND at Kansas City Actors Theatre

by Alan Portner - Aug 14, 2024

It is funny. It is a slice of life. It is a literal peek behind the curtain. Kansas City Actors Theatre production of Alice Childress’s TROUBLE IN MIND allows audiences a long-delayed opportunity to vision America (and its theatrical community) as it appeared in 1955 from an African American point of view. I was struck by how much our country has matured (mostly for the better) over eighty years.

Review: A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE at Long Wharf Theatre

I think Arthur Miller is smiling down at this production.

Review: A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC at Union Avenue Opera

by Steve Callahan - Aug 25, 2022

This, Sondheim's most charming work, receives a splendid production at Union Avenue Opera. Yesterday I mentioned to two of my kids that we'd just seen A Little Night Music. Now they had both memorized most of Sweeney Todd some forty years ago while in grade school or junior high, so I was appalled to find that neither of them was familiar with this earlier Sondheim masterpiece. What sort of wretchedly deprived childhood had we given them?!

Roger and Hammerstein's seminal work of musical theatre Oklahoma! has long been a favorite of those who grew up with the 1955 film starring Shirley Jones and Gordon MacRae with it's incredibly catchy company numbers and timeless message of following one's heart no matter the cost.

First images released of the cast for the London premiere of Tennesee Williams' 'CONFESSIONAL' at Southwark Playhouse, including Rob Ostlere, who was Arthur Digby for three years in 'Holby City'. Tramp's innovative, semi-immersive production reimagines Tennessee Williams' little known play in "Monk's Bar", a run-down British seaside bar on the Essex coast, frequented by life's flotsam and jetsam. The audience are seated in the pub with the locals while the action kicks off around them.

BWW Review: RING OF FIRE, Johnny Cash Jukebox Musical, Delights at Porthouse

by Roy Berko - Jul 11, 2016

Johnny Cash, 'The Man in Black,' was noted as a somber singer of such songs as 'I Walk the Line,' 'If I Were a Carpenter,' and 'Ring of Fire.' The latter was chosen as the title for Richard Maltby, Jr.'s jukebox musical, now on stage at Porthouse Theatre, which loosely centers on the trials and tribulations of Cash's life. While not autobiographical, per se, there is enough of the tale of the man to gain an understanding of Cash, his music, his strong belief in social causes, and his personal problems.

BWW Reviews: JACK LEMMON RETURNS is One Touch of Terrific!

by Cary Ginell - Mar 18, 2015

In JACK LEMMON RETURNS, the legendary actor's son Chris takes the audience through highlights of his father's career. There is, of course, lots of laughter but also poignant moments about the elder Lemmon's total preoccupation with his career, to the detriment of his satellite family's relationship with him.
