When German star, comedian Max Ehrlich, and his best friend, composer Willy Rosen were caught in Holland in 1942 and sent to the Westerbork Transit Camp, the commandant recognized Max and made him an offer he couldn't refuse: Every Monday night before the train leaves for Auschwitz the next morning, Max and Willy will do a cabaret. IF they are funny, they do it next week. If not - they are on the train. What followed was 18 months of the funniest cabaret in all of Europe!

Here's my understatement of the year so far: Broadway star Megan Hilty is one of the most delightful creatures that has ever graced a stage. This was wonderfully confirmed all throughout the Tony Award nominee's Segerstrom Center for the Arts Cabaret series solo debut, which recently opened to an enthusiastic, candlelit crowd Thursday night and continues for two more performances through November 16, 2019 at the Samueli Theater in Costa Mesa. Beautiful, quirky, bawdy, self-deprecating, and undeniably talented, Ms. Hilty was thoroughly engaging and entertaining during her nearly 80-minute acoustic set backed by musical director and principal pianist Matt Cusson and her bassist/guitarist husband, fellow Broadway performer Brian Gallagher.

The preview of the magnificent things to come happens when Brian Stokes Mitchell sings the first song of his current show at Feinstein's/54 Below. It's the Irving Berlin classic “There's No Business Like Show Business”. I'm sure if Berlin ever heard the Stokes version he would bow down in tribute to the thrilling performance and unique revisit that the Tony Award Winner and consummate artist has brought to his 1954 tune written for Ethel Merman in Annie Get Your Gun. Stokes navigates the innovative Tedd Firth arrangement and makes you feel excited, awestruck, and comfortable as his rich baritone voice effortlessly glides through the constant time signature and key changes. This current show at 54 is titled Brian Stokes Mitchell Plays With Music-Holiday and Stokes brings his acting, musicianship, and charismatic personality to make every tune on his song list a moving experience. The New York Times has dubbed Brian Stokes Mitchell as Broadway's “Last Leading Man” but Stokes is even much more than that. He's Chairman of the Board of The Actors Fund. He has a unique ability to bring people together and that theme is constant throughout his show. His encore at this performance was “What A Wonderful World” and the SRO audience left feeling that way mainly because Brian Stokes Mitchell is in it.

MOULIN ROUGE!, JAGGED LITTLE PILL, TINA - THE TINA TURNER MUSICAL, GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY, SING STREET. Five of the 10 original musicals to come to Broadway during the 2019-20 season are generally described as 'jukebox musicals' (more on why I have my reservations about calling the last one a jukebox musical later). For some, this subgenre of the modern musical is a blight on the legacies of Rodgers and Hammerstein, Cole Porter, Jerry Herman, Stephen Sondheim, and every other legend who has brought original songs to stage.

'Throughout my career,' says BroadwayWorld's Richard Ridge, 'I have had the opportunity to do in-depth interviews with some of the greatest artists working on stage, screen and television. One of my favorite interviews, is also one of the rarest, which is a two part sit down with three-time Tony Award recipient, Bernadette Peters. She has done many interviews, but I have never seen another interview with her at this length, that delved so deeply into her illustrious career, which began at the age of five. I conducted this interview on Dec. 1, 1997 and we follow her career highlights from the Horn and Hardart show through the one-night-only Into the Woods reunion. I really hope you enjoy this very special Broadway Rewind.'

How do we make a list of the 101 greatest show tunes from the past 100 years without bias? That's certainly a near-impossible mountain to climb, because even some forms of biases, knowledgeable judgments, are key when doing a task like this. But we need to make it as objective as possible when dealing with something so subjective.
