The Old Globe's 2020 Summer Season brings to Balboa Park an extraordinarily talented group of artists who will delight audiences with their unique takes on four great works of theatre. The season incudes a classic American musical, a new adaptation of a 20th century thriller, and two of Shakespeare's masterworks on our outdoor stage.

The highly-anticipated return engagement of Sir Patrick Stewart's acclaimed oneman version of A CHRISTMAS CAROL to benefit City Harvest and Ars Nova will play for two nights only, December 11 and December 13, at Theater 511 (511 West 54th Street). Multi-GRAMMY® Award-winning composer/pianist/educator Arturo O'Farrill and the non-profit The Afro Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA) announce a special Holiday Dance Concert featuring the 18-piece Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra (ALJO) performing riveting compositions from its acclaimed repertoire at BRIC House on Thursday, December 5, 2019. The Holiday Dance Concert raises funds for the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance's Music Education Programs. The evening will be a retrospective of Latin Jazz Big Band music with an emphasis on Mambo. Arturo O'Farrill and ALJO will perform with special guest vocalists Sammy Gonzalez Jr. and Ivan Llanes. The Fat Afro Latin Jazz Cats Youth Big Band will open the show.

Actress/Producer Tal Fox is about to open in the rarely produced In Trousers at The Lounge. In our conversation she tells us about this and her other theatrical chestnuts. When I was first approached by Giles Foden to adapt his 1998 novel for the stage, I was unsure how to respond. I'd seen Kevin MacDonald's fine movie version in 2006 and wondered what a theatrical version could add to it. So I went back to Giles's novel and found myself gripped by his account of Ugandan history and the complexity of Idi Amin Dada, its nightmarishly charismatic President from 1971 to 1979. Giles constructed Nicholas Garrigan, Amin's physician, out of a number of real prototypes, ranging from rogue diplomats to mercenaries. What gripped me from the outset was the core psychological drama exploring friendship, charisma and denial in the face of atrocity. 

The League of Professional Theatre Women an organization which has been championing women in the professional theatre for over three decades, will present an Oral History Project event with the legendary, five-time Tony Award-winning actress, Angela Lansbury on Thursday, November 14 starting at 6pm in the Bruno Walter Auditorium at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts (111 Amsterdam Avenue at 65th Street). Admission to the event is FREE and seats are available on a first-come-first-seated basis. Doors will open at 5:30pm. 

Continuing its commitment to bringing free Shakespeare to the community and strengthening audience engagement with the arts, The Public Theater, under the leadership of Artistic Director Oskar Eustis and Executive Director Patrick Willingham, will mount its MOBILE UNIT again this fall with a free three-week tour to venues across the city of Shakespeare's MEASURE FOR MEASURE, directed by LA Williams. The Mobile Unit's free tour (October 24-November 16) brings Shakespeare and other works to audiences who have limited or no access to the arts by visiting correctional facilities, homeless shelters, social service organizations, and other community organizations. Following the tour to the five boroughs, there will also be a free three-week engagement of MEASURE FOR MEASURE in The Public's Shiva Theater running Monday, November 18 through Sunday, December 8, with an official press opening on Friday, November 22.

The US-China Music Institute of the Bard College Conservatory of Music announces the second season of the China Now Music Festival,September 25-October 6. The festival's major concerts take place at Carnegie Hall in New York City and at Bing Concert Hall at Stanford University. The festival is dedicated to promoting an understanding and appreciation of music from contemporary China through an annual series of concerts and academic activities. Last year's inaugural season, titled Facing the Past, Looking to the Future, showcased new orchestral works by contemporary Chinese composers. The theme for 2019 is China and America a?' Unity in Music, in recognition of the 40th anniversary of the normalizing of diplomatic relations between the U.S. and China in 1979.

The third Shanghai Isaac Stern International Violin Competition (SISIVC) will take place in Shanghai August 4-25, 2020. The Competition's Organisation Committee announced today that it is officially open for global applications. In celebration of the centennial birthday of Maestro Isaac Stern in 2020, a gala concert has been added to commemorate the longtime friend of China.

Bay Street Theater and Guild Hall, in association with Jamie Cesa and Bel Chiasso Entertainment present a free concert staged reading of The Romeo & Juliet Project, a new musical, featuring the music of Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo, with book by Bradley Bredeweg. This FREE community event will be held in Mashashimuet Park in Sag Harbor, NY on August 16 and 17 at 7 pm and is the latest installment of Bay Street's ongoing Under the Stars Community Outreach Program. The performance is directed by Scott Schwartz, Bay Street Theater's Artistic Director.

Diane Fletcher and Rachel Pickup, will lead the cast in Tom Littler's production of Somerset Maugham's For Services Rendered, the opening play of Jermyn Street Theatre's Memories Season. Diane Fletcher, who plays Charlotte Ardsley, is best known for creating the role of Elizabeth Urquhart opposite Ian Richardson in the BBC series House of Cards. Her career includes leading roles at The National Theatre, The RSC, The Royal Court and on the West End stage as well as numerous television and film appearances. Rachel Pickup will play Eva. Her career encompasses roles in the West End, the RSC, On Broadway and Off Broadway, leading roles on film and television as well as many regional theatres throughout the UK and in the US. Her stage highlights include: The Merchant of Venice at The Globe Theatre and Stephen Unwin's production of Miss Julie at The Rose Theatre Kingston for which she was nominated for the Best Actress Critics' Circle Award.

From 2016, Almeida Young Company have been steadily producing plays working with two groups of young actors. They're This summer their participants aged 14-18 are presenting Molly Taylor's The Wave and the older group (18-25) are staging Nina Segal's (This Isn't) A True Story.

Sting's acclaimed musical, THE LAST SHIP, starring and featuring original music and lyrics by multiple Grammy Award-winner Sting, will make its premiere in Detroit at the Detroit Opera House, April 22-26, 2020, as part of an international Tour. THE LAST SHIP will also have engagements in Los Angeles at Center Theatre Group's Ahmanson Theatre; San Francisco at SHN's Golden Gate Theatre; Washington D.C. at the National Theatre; and in St. Paul, MN at the Ordway.

Vs. Theatre Company presents Sam Shepard's masterpiece TRUE WEST, directed by Scott Cummins (Killer Joe, Bug). TRUE WEST will open on Friday, July 26 at 8pm and will perform through Saturday, August 31 at Vs. Theatre, 5453 W. Pico Blvd. in Los Angeles.
