The interesting thing about The Nutcracker at the Merrill Auditorium in Portland, Maine is just how quickly an audience can settle into it, year after year, like a cup of hot chocolate on a cold night. The venue is packed with an audience of all ages, some dressed in their 'night on the town' finery while others sport flannel shirts, jeans and a baseball cap. This Christmas, Camden People's Theatre will host its first ever Christmas commission with Sh!t Actually (3 21 Dec), a playfully sideways look at Sh!t Theatre's guilty pleasure: the much-loved (and definitely problematic) festive favourite Love Actually. Co-commissioned with HOME Manchester, Sh!t Actually is a live action, two-woman reimagining of one of the most contentious Christmas films of all time. Fusing live songs with queer love stories in a version that gives women, and not just Emma Thompson, actual lines to ask if in 2019 we can still love it, actually. Alongside Sh!t Actually, Camden People's Theatre's alternative Christmas offering includes SheGoat's The Undefinable (10 21 Dec), exploring unconventional relationships and celebrating the unusual and underrepresented qualities of love.

The weekend before Christmas, The Los Angeles Youth Ballet presented a gorgeous, colorful and professional performance of The Nutcracker at the Alex Theatre in Glendale, CA. The production was very carefully constructed, with an emphasis on good technique, passion and commitment in performance and lovingly re-created by Artistic Director and Choreographer, Andrea Paris-Gutierrez. It was staged and choreographed optimally for each age group performing. Enchanting might be an adjective to describe the feeling the performers were emitting to the viewers, who's rapt attention was a sign of both enjoyment and endorsement. The Nutcracker Suite was composed by Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky, and has long been the favorite balletic composition to be performed during the Christmas Season.

On December 19th, 2018 a most extraordinary performance was witnessed at the Soraya Theatre of the Arts - the most traditional and established version, choreographically, even though it has been modified conceptwise, of the iconic ballet, The Nutcracker Suite, composed by Tchaikovsky, which is a true holiday tradition all over the world, was performed by the legendary Moscow Ballet. Ballet Master Vladamir Troschenko, directed this prodiction. The choreography was the choreography that I am familiar with as being the traditional steps and combinations that were the original staging by Marius Patipa and Lev Ivanov of the Imperial Russian Ballet. Selections from The Nutcracker were first performed as an orchestral suite in March 1892. The ballet proper debuted in December of that year. It was presented at St. Petersburg's Mariinsky Theatre.

Bright colors and jingle bell music magically appear on the Lyric Arts Main Street Stage while the time of year leaps back into December, 1968. Harper's Hardware holds their end of year Holiday Happening, or the company's seasonal party, and everyone in the audience attends!  Lyric Arts presents both the inviting entertainment for the company's happening in sync with their own December production through this charming, kitschy in the best way, girl group musical revue: 'Winter Wonderettes.' Written and created by Roger Bean in 2003, with lyrics and arrangements by Brian Baker, this 'juke box musical' features catchy tunes to hum or rock out to while smiling 'all the way' through the evening, and then 'all the way home.'

Irving Berlin's WHITE CHRISTMAS is a 2000 musical based on Paramount Pictures 1954 film of the same name featuring the songs of Irving Berlin. The film itself was a remake of the film Holiday Inn. The new book is by David Ives and Paul Blake and features all of the songs from the 1954 film, along with some trunk songs, all by Irving Berlin and hews remarkably close to the plot line of the film, with a few exceptions. It premiered in St. Louis in 2000 at The Muny, after which it opened in San Francisco in 2004. This new stage musical played a limited engagement of 53 performances on Broadway at the Marquis Theatre in 2008. It received two 2009 Tony nominations and seven Drama Desk Award nominations.
