NTCs third production of their 2018/2019 Season is LOOT, Joe Orton's legendary and darkly comedic play. (Novato, CA) The Novato Theater Company, recently praised by the Marin IJ for producing three of 2018s ten best plays, is proud to present LOOT. Heavily censored by the Lord's Chamberlain when it first premiered in 1965 but now presented in its original form, Loot is an epic farce about Hal and Dennis, two British youths who attempt to conceal their latest bank robbery from Hal's deeply devout father, the live-in nurse and a nosy inspector, on the same day as Hal's mother's funeral. They navigate sexual politics, catholic guilt, beatings from the police, and an unruly corpse, all in the name of the only thing more important than life itself: money!Joe Orton's public career from 1964 until his brutal murder at the hands of his partner in 1967 was brief but highly influential. During that short period he shocked, outraged, and amused audiences with his scandalous black comedies. LOOT's initial production was widely panned, but a highly successful West End run followed, and Orton went on to write Funeral Games, the screenplay Up Against It for The Beatles, and his final full-length play What the Butler Saw. He was memorialized by the adjective "Ortonesque", a word that refers to work characterized by a dark yet farcical cynicism, and in the biography Prick Up Your Ears by John Lahr, followed by a film of the same name starring Gary Oldman as Orton.
