Playwrights Foundation Announces the Bay Area Playwrights Festival, Producing Partnerships and Rough Readings

The 41st Annual Bay Area Playwrights Festival, the premiere festival for new works on the west coast, runs July 20th - 29th returning to the recently renovated Potrero Stage, 1695 18th St, San Francisco, CA 94107. Over 700 scripts were submitted for this year's festival. The final Six talented emerging playwrights from across the country will each have two readings of a new work presented by the Bay Area's top acting talent. Final playwrights will be announced in April and tickets for the festival will go on sale in May.

A makeshift family of auto-plant workers navigate the possibility of foreclosure in this funny, tough, and tender American drama which captured critical raves. In honor of its 45th anniversary, Dimensions Dance Theater is pleased to announce a celebratory program to take place at the Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts Friday and Saturday, April 13 - 14, at 8 p.m. Highlights include two world premieres: a dance a dance representing voices of the homeless, choreographed by company member Latanya d. Tigner, and a dance inspired by the life and legacy of Harriet Tubman, choreographed by former company member Andrea Vonny Lee. The evening will conclude with a remount of Tigner's acclaimed second line dance parade, St. Ann and N. Rampart. Today, Luther Burbank Center for the Arts (LBC) announced its annual benefit, The Art of Dessert on Saturday, April 7, 2018 in the Center's Lytton Rancheria Grand Lobby (50 Mark West Springs Road in Santa Rosa). Now in its 15th year, The Art of Dessert, an evening of fine dining, features one-of-a-kind confections created by famed North Bay pastry artists. Desserts will be judged by a panel of local celebrities, and will double as artistic table centerpieces and the delectable final course. The Art of Dessert raises vital funds for the Luther Burbank Memorial Foundation, which allows the Center to engage Sonoma County residents in the power of the arts, from world class performances to nationally-recognized education programs that change the lives of 40,000 children annually. Since its inception, The Art of Dessert has raised $3.2 million and helped the Center provide the enrichment of arts to over 400,000 children.

American Conservatory Theater Receives $50,000 Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for VIETGONE

National Endowment for the Arts (NEA)Chairman Jane Chu has approved more than $25 million in grants as part of the NEA's first major funding announcement for fiscal year 2018.  Included in this announcement is an Art Works grant of $50,000 to San Francisco's American Conservatory Theater(A.C.T.) to support the upcoming Bay Area premiere of Qui Nguyen's Vietgone, playing at A.C.T.'s Strand Theater (1127 Market St.) February 21-April 22, 2018, and the development of community outreach events in connection with the production. The Art Works category is the NEA's largest funding category and supports projects that focus on the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence, public engagement with diverse and excellent art, lifelong learning in the arts, and/or the strengthening of communities through the arts.

This spring Cutting Ball Theater welcomes the return of Founding Artistic Director Rob Melrose to direct Shakespeare's neglected classic, TIMON OF ATHENS, the final play of the Theater's 2017-18 Season. In the title role of Timon, Brennan Pickman-Thoon leads a cast that includes Ed Berkeley, Maria Ascension Leigh, Adam Niemann, Doug Nolan, Radhika Rao, David Sinaiko, John Steele Jr. and Courtney Walsh. Timon of Athens opens in previews on March 30 and runs through April 29. Marquis and Tru, both 14 and black, meet one evening in the holding cell of a police station. Marquis is a Nietzsche-loving prep-schooler, adopted by white people and living in the affluent suburb of AchievementHeights; while Tru is a super smart, Tupac loving, kid from central Baltimore. Tru decides Marquis has lost his blackness and pens a how-to manual for him entitled 'Being Black for Dummies.' They navigate through both Marquis' world of cheerleaders, jocks, headmasters and Tru's world in Baltimore all while they debate, struggle and ultimately develop a friendship that reveals that maybe Tupac and Nietzsche were saying the same thing all along. 'Hooded, or Being Black for Dummies' is a comedic and truthful examination of growing up black in America by rising-star playwright Tearrance Arvelle Chisholm.

Golden Thread's Celebration Of Women's Day Takes On The Patriarchy

Golden Thread Productions, the first American theatre company devoted to the Middle East, presents What Do the Women Say?: Dismantling Patriarchy, its annual celebration of International Women's Day. This year's program showcases the work of leading Middle Eastern women artists that are working to expose and eradicate toxic masculinity at home, at work, and on the national stage. The event features a presentation by Yemeni-American visual artist Yasmine Diaz about her collage series, One Way or Another; a dramatic reading by Golden Thread Resident Artist Atosa Melody Babaoff of the short story "White Torture" by Iranian author Farnoosh Moshiri; a performance by Lebanese-American singer Naima Shalhoub featuring music from her debut album Live in San Francisco County Jail; and an excerpt from the documentary film The Judge by Erika Cohn and Sara Maamouri about the Arab world's first woman Sharia judge. After the presentations, Founding Artistic Director Torange Yeghiazarian will facilitate a conversation with the participating artists and the audience. Reem's California will sell food in the lobby starting at 6pm. The full program is 100 minutes without intermission.
