Matthew Lopez Named Old Globe Playwright-In-Residence

Old Globe Executive Producer Lou Spisto today announced that Matthew Lopez has been named Playwright-in-Residence. The two-year residency includes a commission for a new play. Lopez will also take part in the Globe's education outreach and audience development activities. His plays include Zoey's Perfect Wedding, Reverberation and Tio Pepe, which was presented at The Public Theater as part of the 2008 Summer Play Festival.

Diversionary Begins Final Production of the Season with MOSCOW, 5/6

Diversionary Theatre will stage the musical play Moscow as the sixth and final show of their 2009-2010 season. Moscow is a musical play involving three men attempting to define who they are and why they are confined together in an abandoned theatre. While enduring their 'soul searching,' they make use of their time by playing sockball and by acting out various roles from Anton Chekhov's play The Three Sisters. While self exploration, relationship conflict and gay romance are part of the chemistry, Moscow amplifies universal and eternal questions: 'Who are we, Where are we, and Why are we here?'
North Coast Repertory Theatre Presents Student One Act Festival 5/14-16

Four young people, ranging in age from 11 to 16, met the challenge of writing, directing and producing their own plays for the 2010 One Act Festival at the North Coast Repertory Theatre in Solana Beach. The One Act Festival will be presented on May 14-16. The plays include: 'A Walk in the Park' by Peter Lillian; 'Super Pi' by Joelle Leib; 'Who's on Alpha?' by theatre school director Matt Thompson; 'The Purple Peach and the Punctuated People' by ; and 'Revived Hearts' by Kari Benirschke.
DEAR HARVEY Readings Will Celebrate First Statewide Harvey Milk Day 5/19-20

In celebration of California's Day of Recognition honoring Harvey Milk on May 22, Diversionary Theatre will present two readings of the play Dear Harvey. Drawn from over thirty interviews conducted by Patricia Loughrey, Dear Harvey recounts the achievements and vision of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man elected to a major public office in the United States. The tribute play weaves together the voices of a drag queen, a State Senator, an international gay rights activist, a nineteen-year-old composer and others with the personal and political writings of Harvey Milk to paint a portrait of a leader, and a vision for equality.

After several attempts to stage this steamy Strindberg classic in venues throughout San Diego, Stone Soup Theatre's Miss Julie has finally found a home. Thanks to a unique collaboration with North Coast Repertory Theatre, the production will be staged and presented to audiences as a companion piece to NCR's production of Ghosts, by Henrik Ibsen.

Recognizing excellence in High School theater, auditions for the 2010 Globe Honors competition will take place on May 1 at The Old Globe. Semifinalists and finalists will perform on the Old Globe Stage on May 17 at 8:00 p.m. The evening will conclude with the announcement of the Globe Honors winners and an award ceremony. Winners of the annual competition will receive scholarships and the Leading Actor and Actress winners will receive an all expenses paid trip to New York City to compete in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (NHSMTA) to be held June 28 at the Palace Theatre on Broadway.

Executive Producer Lou Spisto has announced that due to unforeseen conflicts with Roger Rees' schedule, The Old Globe's upcoming production of What You Will has been replaced with Golda's Balcony starring four-time Tony Award nominee Tovah Feldshuh. Written by William Gibson and supervised by Scott Schwartz, Golda's Balcony earned Feldshuh a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress, and is the longest running one-woman show in Broadway history. Golda's Balcony will runin the Old Globe Theatre April 28 - May 30. Previews run April 28 - May 1. Opening night is Saturday, May 1 at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are currently available to subscribers only. Five local choreographers will each create a new dance work for Diversionary Theatre's special event, Dance/Theatre, with four performances, April 22-25, 2010. The project was conceived by Peter G. Kalivas of The PGK Project in conjunction with Diversionary's Executive & Artistic Director Dan Kirsch. This is the second year of what will become an annual event. Dance/Theatre merges theatre and dance audiences while presenting universal stories through dance inspired by productions previously staged by Diversionary. 'We are very excited about this collaboration,' said Kirsch. 'Diversionary has a long history of creating new work, and this project is a great way to connect to the dance community.'
