Review: SPRING AWAKENING at The 5th Avenue Theatre
Seattle: Jay Irwin on June 15, 2024

Dear Readers, I should start by saying that “Spring Awakening”, the musical from Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater based on the 1891 play by Frank Wedekind, has never been one of my favorites. But that first national tour and especially the 2012 local production from Balagan Theatre gave me a better appreciation for the show for what it is. However, the current production from the 5th Avenue Theatre did not.

Review: CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY at Fulton Theatre
Central Pennsylvania: Rich Mehrenberg on June 15, 2024

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a scrumdiddlyumptious summer treat on the Fulton stage. The production retains everything you love about the original movie (Pure Imagination, eye-popping sets, bratty kids, etc.) and eliminates or updates the parts that weren’t so great (mediocre special effects and the always fast-forwardable Cheer Up, Charlie).

Review: MAD Theatre of Tampa Presents URINETOWN: THE MUSICAL at the Shimberg Playhouse
Tampa/St. Petersburg: Peter Nason on June 15, 2024

Dystopia and pee; there's nothing like URINETOWN!

Review: KINKY BOOTS at Gettysburg Community Theatre
Central Pennsylvania: Andrea Stephenson on June 15, 2024

Gettysburg Community Theatre’s production of Kinky Boots will have audiences tapping their toes, cheering for the underdog, and wishing for their own pair of red stiletto boots.

Review: GIFFORDS CIRCUS: AVALON, Chiswick House and Gardens
UK / West End: Kat Mokrynski on June 15, 2024

Written and Directed by Cal McCrystal, Avalon is the 2024 show for Giffords Circus, a village-green travelling circus that follows the belief of ther founder, Nell Giffords, that “Art is Love.” The tents and caravans feel as though they have been pulled from a classic movie.

Review: RBG: OF MANY, ONE at State Theatre Centre
Australia - Perth: David Bravos on June 15, 2024

RBG: OF MANY, ONE enjoyed a season of runaway success in 2022, coming back this year for a national tour. Perth now has the opportunity to see for itself that the hype is well and truly deserved for this one woman show.

Review: MAGIC FOR ANIMALS at Hollywood Fringe Festival
Los Angeles: Andrew Child on June 14, 2024

As the mystical opening chords begin to play and Liz Toonkel emerges in a stunning sequined costume designed by Stephen James, one might relax back into their seat, assured that a flashy, polished magic show which meekly follows the formula made popular by Copperfield and Blaine is about to unfold

Review: JELLY'S LAST JAM at Pasadena Playhouse
Los Angeles: Evan Henerson on June 14, 2024

Director Kent Gash’s production in Pasadena serves up equal parts heat and cool, a slick and sweaty celebration of a man who was as vibrant and dangerous as his music. Under the musical direction of Darryl Archibald and choreography of Dell Howlett – both of which are first-rate – the evening cooks.

Review: AN ACT OF GRACE at Ottawa Little Theatre
Ottawa: Courtney Castelino on June 14, 2024

Review: MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING at Big Idea Theatre
Sacramento: Courtney Symes on June 14, 2024

‘Tis the season for Shakespeare! Big Idea Theatre is now showing their gender-bending version of Much Ado About Nothing, just in time to celebrate Pride. This modernized take is playing through June 29th.

Review: MOULIN ROUGE! THE MUSICAL at Fox Cities Performing Arts Center
Appleton, WI: Jarrod Michael on June 14, 2024

The Tony Award winning theatrical sensation, Moulin Rouge! The Musical, is without question the sparkling diamond of the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center Broadway Across America season!

Review: Susan Mack Shines Bright in NO MORE BLUES at Birdland
Cabaret: Analisa Bell on June 14, 2024

Susan Mack played to a sold-out crowd at Birdland on Monday night. Overall, Mack delivered a wonderful night of music, which transported the audience away from the stresses of the day and melted the blues away.

Review: DOLLY! at The Can Can
Seattle: Jay Irwin on June 14, 2024

Dear Readers, as you know, I’ve often extolled the fabulousness of the shows at The Can Can. Director Chris Pink and the cast and crew repeatedly bring the goods. And I’ve often commented on how one show after another may be one of my new favorites of theirs. Well, Dear Readers, they’ve done it again with, “Dolly!”!

Review: Lyric Stage Company Of Boston's YELLOW FACE is a Head on Look at Fallout of Miscasting
Boston: R. Scott Reedy on June 14, 2024

There was considerable excitement surrounding the pre-Broadway world-premiere production of David Henry Hwang’s “Face Value” when it opened at Boston’s Colonial Theatre in early 1993.

Review: The Second City's 112th Mainstage Revue
Chicago: Rachel Weinberg on June 14, 2024

The Second City’s 112th Mainstage Revue, THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETOURS, promises “weird, sexy comedy” in its opening moments. This ensemble definitely hits on the weird and occasionally hits on the funny. I think this revue, while not always consistently funny, gave this ensemble some real moments to shine. And as with past Second City revues I’ve seen, the show’s mix of sketch and improv has lively energy, and the wide variety of sketches presented made me curious to see what comes next.

Review: HAIR at The Premiere Playhouse
South Dakota: Sonja Niles on June 14, 2024

The opening night performance of HAIR at The Premiere Playhouse was a loud, proud and purposeful showing of rock music artistry with some technical elements that unfortunately overshadowed the actors on stage at various points in the show.
